WASHINGTON

June 17, 1913.

1W dear Dr. Patterson:
Allow me to thank you sincerely fer the cordial
81d attractive invitation which you are good enough to

extend to me in your kind letter of June 16th. I am,

indeed, very sorry that it is not possible for me to ac—

cept. I have bound myself during the first year of my
odm'nistration to devote my time entirely to :y duties,
and I am therefore declining all invitations to attend
public flinotions during that period. You can readily
understand how embarrassing it would be should I make
an exception to this rule.

Please let me assure you that I warmly appreciate
your kindness, and that the generous personal words to
which you give expression are especially pleasing to me.

cordially and sincerely yours,
