James K. Patterson, Pres.,

Lexington. Kentucky.
Dear Sir:-

Your favor of 28th inst., at hand. I an inclined to
concur with you in ”he construction of the resolution referred to,
except I had not thought a proper construction would eufnoiize the
investigating committee to reacn any conclusions in the matter. but
only conferred upon us tne authorit' to investigate to the extent
of procuring all the testimony possible he ~ing upon the alleged
Charges. and to report‘the same at the June meeting of the Board.
I have not conferrred with the other two members of this board.
however. and do not know what their construction of tne resolution
is. It may be that the committee as a whole will reach the con-
clus:i on that they ought +0 reach a decision upon the cnarg gee pre—
ferred and report that together with the evidence to the board,

I fixed the time to begin this investigation at the

én~1/«1v
trustees room in the gymnasiumfion Wednesday. April 30th, and will
be there at that time. I have JUSt receivei a le1fi,er however frn
from Mr. McCord asking tnat tne matter be postponed until next
Monday so that he can be present: and inasmuch as I prefer to have

the entire committee present. if possible, we may postpone the i.n-
vestigateon until that time.

Yours truly, (Z/QELW /C77(Z%Ait/t

Dear Sir
Yours of May evth duly rec ived. 1 note carefully that you

a

say with reie'ence to the effort being made in opposition to your and

your administration. I assure you that I have sei aer formed nor exw
pressed an opinion as to the troubles you mention; and shall reeerVe my
Opinion until all persods concerned have had a full oLportunity to be
heard. I have received several marked copies of the Lexington papere,
purporting to give a true version of the troubles in the military de—
partment. The exageration was so apparent that I gave no thought or
eeriooe oorsideretion to the matter. You may reet 1.; on ';r it is not
possible for ex parte statements, made by newspaper correspondents, or
any one else, to in the least prejudice me against you or your work.

I will,if PrOVidence wille,be in Lexington on June 3rd. .f th
matters are presented before the Board,I assure you that I will giVe xxx

the matter a judicious hearing before foriming amxxjudgment.

Yours truly,
