Dear Sir:

Mr. Straus instructs me to say that since he wrote you yesterday he
has received the extract which you neglected to enclose in your letter.

The firm of C; B; Richard & Co. here is a responsible forwarding

house, and you might write to them in behalf of your friend. Perhaps they can
give you valuable suggestions.

Very truly yours,

Private secretary.

Honorable Ferdinand Peck,
Commissionor theral,
1826 Hichigan Avenue, City.
Dear Sir:—

On the 30th of ¥ovomher there came to me from Jumps V. Patter—
son, President of the State College of Loxiogton, Kentucky, and one of
the best known men in that City, tht enclosed letter. To it I was un—
abln to respond for some days, owing to absence from the City. "hon I
rotvrnod I wrote to President Patterson advising him that I was too busy
to give the matter attontion, but if it met with his approval I WCfild
forward the correspondnnce to you, in order that it might receive svch
attention as you thought it dosorvcd. In response to that letter I on
in receipt of a second letter from Presideflt Patterson, which is also
enclosed to you.

If the matter comes within your line, either directly or in—
directly, will you not ploaso hand it to somo one of your choice in
Yew York City. Tho fact that Pre.ident Pott0r33n Has written about it,
leads me to believe that it is a matter worthy of some serious consider-
ation, and itgway be quite profitable to some one.

Hon. T. B. Dunstan,
President Board of Control,
Michigan College of Mines, Hancock, Michigan,
Dear Sir:

I take the liberty of recommending to your consider?
ation for the vacant presidency of the Michigan College of
Mines, Dr. Charles R. Keyes of Des MOines, Iowa, who was for
some time associated with us here at the Johns Hopkins
University, and during the past seven years has been actively
identified with two of the strongest State surveys in this
country,in both of which he was the real executive head.

Dr. Keyes came to us in the autumn of 1889,a graduate

of the University of Iowa and already a recognized authority

I
upon the geology and paleontology of the upper Mississippi
basin. During the three years he remained connected with
the Johns Hopkins University he conducted investigations of
the most important character, acquitting himself in all his
relations with the highest credit to himself and receiving
in June 1892 the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from this
University. Dr. Keyes secured all of the honors which it was
possible to obtain)holding the position of University
Scholar and also Fellow, positions which are only open to
thdse of recognized attainments.

We have followed Dr. Keyes’ career since leaving the

University with much admiration on account of the great

ability which he? has manifested, not only in the field of

original research but as an efficient administrative officer.

“1‘15

It was due to his initiative and his energy that the State
of Iowa organized its present efficient Geological Survey.
On account of his youth Dr. Keyes was made nominally the
Assistant State Geologist but the practical direction of all
the affairs 'was in his hands. After a few years of highly
valuable work in Iowa Dr. Keyes was called to be the State
Geologist was 331366 km ha Ema $3ate Gmmkagixk of Missouri
and under his able management the Geological Survey of that
State took the lead among our State Geological Surveys as a
progressive and thoroughly practical State bureau. The work
which Dr. Keyes succeeded in accomplishing, under many trying
circumstances}in the years when; he was the head of this
Survey has commanded the admiration of geologists everywhere.

I feel no hesitancy in cordially recommending Dr. Xeyes
as a man of unusual administrative ability and large geologi—
cal experience, an experience which is not confined alone to
the theoretical phases of geology but also to those questions
of practical moment.which must come before a director of a
mining school.

I shall be glad to give you any further detailed

information which you may desire.v I am,

Very respectfully,

N. I think. pernaoe Lient. Threlkeld'e pur)oee can be best enn—

of Lient. Threlkeld's gallantry and efficienov f . Cuban campaign.
You will pardon me for saying that it would
pleaevre and Rratifieation to me for Liént. th?lkeld to secure the
position of Commandant at the stare Agricultural and Mechanical College,
and to add that in my opinion it will be a good thing for the students
to have as their commandant an ofiioer Lro is not only a graduate of
