 V FOREWORD ‘
‘ ' The Inventory of the County Archives of Arkansas is one of a p
‘ number of‘EEEEEE‘Eb'HiEEB}EBEi‘EAEE¥EEI§‘§FEbE?EE’EEFoughout the
United States by workers on Historical Records Survey projects of ‘
the Work Projects Administration. The publication herewith pre— ‘
a sented, an inventory of the archives of Baxter County, is number 5
of the Arkansas series,
I The Historical Records Survey program was undertaken in the f’f
winter of 1935—56 for the purpose of providing useful employment for I "
_ needy unemployed historians, lawyers, teachers, and research and ' é
clerical workers, In carrying out this objective, the project was ‘ f
’ organized to compile inventories of historical materials, particu— i
l larly the unpublished government documents and records which are 5
: basic in the administration of local government, and which provide ,
E invaluable date for students of political, economic, and social his- ‘.
[ tory. The archival guide herewith presented is intended to meet the f
{' requirements of day—to-day administration by the officials of the - _f
county, and also the needs of lawyers, businessmen, and other citi» ':
Zens who require facts from the public records for the proper con- '1,
' duct of thwlr affairs, The volume is so designed that it can be
' , used by the historian in his research in unprinted sources in the
4 ‘ some way he uses the library card catalog for printed sources. V?
,l The inVontori s produced by the Historical Records Survey pro— ,” ,
‘ jects attempt to do more than giro merely a list of rncords —— they »_ [
attempt further to sketch in th: historical background of the county «:3
. or other unit of government, and to describe precisely and in detail » ' ‘3
- the organization and functions of the government agencies whose rg— . 3,,
cords they list. The county, town, and other local inventories for . '_.f
the entire country will, when complotjd, constitute an cncyclopcdiu ‘{
of local government is well is a bibliography of local irchivos. Up 3:”
to the present time more than 1,500 Survey publications have been is- 5fi
. sued in the country as a whole. 1
i The successful conclusion of the work of the historical Records v3
. Survey projects, even in 1 single county, would not be possible with- TIE
out the support of public officiils, historical ind legal spaciil- ‘Tq
I ists, and many other groups in the community, Their cooper“tion is ' . gfi
. gratefully icknowlidgcd. \ 1- _j

5 Dimensions .

% Dimensions are always given in inches, unless otherwise indicated;

g in the entries, therefore, the symbol for inches (“) is omitted.

1 Location 2: Records

; Baxter County records are located at the residence of'W. H. Powell,

‘ which serves as a temporary courthouse pending completion of the new
courthouse now under construction. When the new building is completed the

i records will be housed with their respective offices.

9172.55; 3.623811685

g Title-line cross references are used to show the continuity of a re-

1 cord_series which has been kept separately for a period of time and with ‘

j other records for different periods of time. An example is that in entry

j 3 "1890¢1933,in County Court Record, entry 4," They are also used in all

, artificial entries, those set up to cover records which must be shown

3 - separately under their proper office even though they are kept in files

i or records appearing elsewhere in the inventory, as, for example, the

1 title~line reference in entry 10; "In Deed Record, entry 9." The descrip~

l tion of the entry shows the title and entry number of the record from

j which the cross reference is made, as, for example, these words in entry

i 52; "Also contains: Docket of Chancery Court Cases, 1890-1902, entry

1 76." Dates shown in the description of the master entry or entry of

j miscellaneous contents are used only for the part or parts of the record

1 contained therein, and are shown only when they vary from those of the

‘ master entry.

i A citation of an act of the Legislature of the Territory of Arkansas,

} ' or of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas, or an act of a legis-

i lative body of another Territory or State, refers to the page number of

i the official publication of the laws.

Q A citation of a decision of the Arkansas State Supreme Court gives

1 the style of the case and the volume and page number of the publication.

: The title of any other published volume is always shown in full the

; first time used. Thereafter the short-title form is used.
