FOREWORD

This bulletin presents a. complete listing of the elementary
schools of the Commonwealth for 1962-63. In addition to the list of
schools of eight or more teachers and their classifications, the ele-
mentary schools with less than eight teachers are listed.

I note with a great deal of pride, the improvements being made
in the area of elementary education. I want to express my Sincere
appreciation to all those who through their dedicated services are
helping to bring about this improvement from the classroom teacher
to the staff in the Department of Education and the Commission
on Elementary Schools of the Kentucky Association of Colleges,

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS FOR THE
SCHOOL-YEAR 1962-63

There were 947 elementary schools accredited by the State
Board of Education during the school year 1962-63. Of this number
593 were under the control of the county school districts and 236
were under the control of the independent districts. Fourteen were
State, Federal, or Regional schools and 104 were private schools.
As will be seen, there was a variety of organizations according to
the grades included in the type of organization. By far, the greatest
number of the organizations conform to a 1-8 type of organization

In all of the elementary schools there was a total staff of 16,883
teachers, supervisors, principals, and other special instructional
personnel serving during the school year of 1962-63. Of this number
15,138 or nearly 90 per cent. were serving in the schools of eight or
more teachers or schools accredited by the State Board of Education.
There is indication that the professional staff is growing not only
in quantity but in quality as well. During; the school year of 1962-63,
nearly 79 per cent of the total staff had a quality of training of a
Bachelor’s Degree plus, 13.9 semester hours. This was an incerase of
7.3 per cent over the previous year and over 22 per cent. in four
years from 1959-60 to 1962-63.

Table IV below gives the median prepared of all elementary
school personnel for a fifteen-year period from 1948—63.
