 FOREWORD

A review of the accreditation of elementary schools of the state for
the school year 1971-72 continues to indicate that major progress is being
made in most areas of elementary education.

Progress in the various areas reflects the great concern that
elementary personnel have for meeting the individual needs of children.
The importance of this concern is shown by improvement in the follow-
ing areas:

VExpansion of curriculum offerings
\/Increase of experimental programs
VGreater variety of teaching procedures and techniques

\/The use of various teaching aids has greatly increased during
recent years

Elementary schools with eight or more teachers are classified as
Extended, Standards, Basic or Approved. Appropriate standards and
criteria adopted by the State Board of Education are written into regula-
tions for accrediting the elementary schools.

You will note that there are still relatively few schools classified
as Extended but you will also observe a gradual increase in the number
of Standard schools and a slight decrease in the number of Basic schools.

We trust this bulletin will be helpful to both elementary school
Del‘sonnel and others striving for a qualitative elementary school for
each child in Kentucky.
