9 ADOLPH FREDERICK RUPPWhen the sport of basketball is mentioned today, a direct chain of thought eventually brings out the name of one man who has become virtually synonymous with the game over the past quarter-centuryAdolph Rupp of Kentucky.
Such unprecedented recognition for the fabulous cage mentor is only natural since his deeds in the past 27 years as head man of the famous Wildcats of the Bluegrass have resulted in phenomenal success as witnessed by the record of 561 victories out of 658 startsa winning average of better than 85 percent.
Rupp is recognized by sports authorities as the nation's winningest basketball mentor and one of the game's most astute and colorful students. The amazing "Man in the Brown Suit" is credited in most quarters with doing more than any other modern tutor to make basketball a national spectator sport. From the very outset of his career at Kentucky, which began in 1930, he has introduced or popularized many new and revised trends in the game that have aided ma-
terially in making the country basketball-minded. One such innovation was the controlled fast break offensive pattern which has since become the crowd-pleasing trademark of Wildcat cage teams.
The colorful Kentucky Colonel has become, without a doubt, the best known and most widely quoted cage coach in America and his personal fame is equalled only by the success he has instilled in the highly-publicized Kentucky basketball powerhouses.
The record shows an unparalleled honor roll of 17V2 Southeastern Conference titles (one was shared), three NCAA Tournament championships, and a National Invitation Tournament trophy. Added to this list of honors, Rupp's distinguished Wildcats own four titles from the Sugar Bowl Tournament and three triumphs in their own high calibre U.K. Invitational Tournament as well as Olympic Trials collegiate bracket laurels in 1948 and a nominal world's championship through participation as one half of the successful USA entry in the '48 Olympic Games.

'Where Friends Delight To Meet'
BY THE NUMBERS
Over the past 18 years, a total of 13 University of Kentucky basketball players have been honored by the school through retirement of their game jersies.
The first such honor was bestowed on Layton Rouse, All-Conference guard in 1940, whose jersey was retired upon conclusion of his cage career. Other "retirements" were made in 1949 of jersies worn by members of the "Fabulous Five" and in 1954 of the shirts of the undefeated team.
Although, technically speaking, the numbers on the various jersies were never retired, many Kentucky fans were surprised to see the numerals of past standouts worn by this year's varsity and freshman players.
The explanation, other than the fact that it was the jersies rather than numbers that were retired, is traceable to a new section in the basketball rule book which directs that no single digit number greater than 5 or numbers 1 and 2 shall be used this year. The rule book also makes a recommendation that teams use even numbers on their light suits and odd numbers on their dark uniforms.
In order to comply with both the new regulation and recommendation, it has been necessary to again use certain of the numbers which were previously "retired."

Meet A Wildcat -
DICK HOWE
Jr. Center-Forward
Carbondale, III.
One of only two non-Kentuckians on the current Wildcat roster, Howe is a three year vet-teran reserve who is being counted on by the coaching staff for important duty as a relief man at either center or forward. Dick was held out of action, a rare occurence in Kentucky basketball, two years back and was used only sparingly last season, but he has now shed some of the pounds that have held him back to some degree in the past. He is extremely agile at 6-5 and 195 and shoots either the hook or one-hand push shot from short ranges. Last year, Dick played only 72 minutes in 1 1 games.
HAROLD ROSS SeniorGuard
Hickman, Ky.
The stumbling block of too much formidable competition ahead of him each year has cost Harold Ross the opportunity to blossom into the fine collegiate eager that most of his ardent supporters had predicted. The coaches agree that Harold very likely could do a better job if he had the opportunity to play regularly, but starting duty has to be won in practice and he has never quite showed enough to make the grade. Nevertheless, they take a good look at Ross every season and never are hesitant to insert him into a tight game. He has a good shot from about any place on the court but is best with a jump shot.

HARRY LANCASTER, Assistant CoachWhen Harry Lancaster finds a spare moment to reflect on his days as an all-around star athlete at Georgetown (Ky.) College back in the early thirties, he can recall with a degree of dismay how close he came to never pursuing the "round ball" sport that in the days since has earned him a somewhat unique position in the basketball world.
An All-Conference halfback for three straight years and captain during his last two seasons, Lancaster's football career almost overshadowed his play on the basketball court. In the cage sport, he was equally successful with three All-Conference nominations and two team captaincies to his creditbut considered himself a better football player than eager. Experience, however, proved him a good student and teacher of the sport of basketball as he began his coaching career.
Lancaster bosses a promising group of yearling cagers and holds down the position of assistant varsity basketball coach and general right hand man to the fabulous Adolph Rupp When he was made a full-time assistant by Coach Rupp in 1948, Lancaster joined a very select group due to the general scarcity of such positions at major colleges and universities. He was born in Paris, Ky., in 191 1, and attended Paris High School, participating for four years in all sports.
