GOVERNOR LOUIE B. NUNN, the Commonwealth's chief executive and chairman of the Board of Trustees, believes strongly that self-reliance, pride and courage are the by-products of intercollegiate athletics. His interest in Kentucky basketball was emphasized when he presented his first "Governor's Trophy" to Wildcat Coach Adolph Rupp. Governor Nunn, 46, is a native of Barren County. He attended Bowling Green Business University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville, where he earned a law degree in 1950. He is an avid sportsman and spectator and a successful attorney who has served in both executive and judicial positions. The third Republican this century to be elected Governor in Kentucky, he formerly served as a county judge and city attorney.

PRESIDENT OTIS A. SINGLETARY came to Lexington in August, 1969, from the University of Texas, Austin, where he was executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Dr. Singletary, who is eighth president of the University, served a total of eight years at Texas, progressing during seven (1 954-61) of those years from instructor to professor, associate dean of Arts and Sciences and assistant to the president. Then for five years (1961-66), he was chancellor of the University of North Carolina, although he was on leave from October 1964 to January 1966 to serve as director of the Job Corps, Office of Economic Opportunity.
K
ATHLETICS DIRECTOR HARRY C. LANCASTERAfter a critical hospital stay last spring, Harry Lancaster bounced back courageously and kept the Wildcat athletic ship-of-state running smoothly. Lancaster was named acting AD in September 1968 and permanent AD three months later. He previously had been associated with Adolph Rupp since 1946 and remained as Rupp's chief assistant until the end of the 1968-69 season, when he left the coaching ranks to concentrate on the complex job of running the entire UK athletics program. A native of Paris, he is a graduate of Georgetown College with a master's degree from UK. "Your Sports Authority .. .'

Mike Casey had just finished dinner in his Simpson-ville home July 30, 1969, when University of Kentucky teammates Dan Issel and Mike Pratt called from Lexington and asked if he wanted to play basketball.
Casey, who had a Softball tournament scheduled at 9:30 p.m. in Lexington, figured he could get in a half hour or so of basketball before the tournament. He swung by the home of a buddy, James Hayden, and they headed, after gassing up, for another friend's house to get Casey's sfotball equipment.
Six miles from home, Casey swung off the Southbound 55 exit on 1-64 at approximately 50 miles an hour. The rear left tire blew out, the car spun completely around and headed for a light pole.
"I tried to jump over," Casey said. "I got all my body over except my left leg; it caught on the emergency brake."
Casey was conscious during the half hour he was pinned. The rescue squad had to pry loose both doors and jack the left door off the leg.
"I had stopped most of the bleeding myself with a handkerchief," he said. "I could see I had a broken leg. The bone was sticking through. I thought maybe my basketball days were over."
Casey was taken to a hospital at She I byvi 11 e, "cleaned up" and transferred to Louisville, where he was in the St. Joseph Hospital operating room from 1 1 '30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m.
Coach Adolph Rupp, one of the first persons called after Casey's parents were notified, recalls vividly his
reaction: "I thought what it would do to the boy's future in basketball. We would go along without him, but I was worried for him."
Casey's leg was broken in three places, including the big bone which heals slowest. Hopeful fans speculated that Casey would be back in the lineup by the first of the year, but persons in the know wondered if he would ever play basketball again.
The cast came off in December and Casey, a good 20 pounds over his playing weight and with a left leg noticeably shorter and skinnier than the right leg, began the long comeback battle. Hard work on a construction job and physical workouts during summer brought his weight down to a trim 190 pounds. Issel and Pratt, who invited Casey to assist their new basketball clinic at Danville, gleefully reported Casey was "good as ever."
And just how good was Casey?
Complimented by Coach Rupp as the best clutch player ever to wear a UK basketball uniform, Casey was All-SEC his sophomore and junior year, leading the team in scoring (20.1) as a sophomore and finishing second (19.1) to Issel as a junior. During his junior year, he set a UK record of 129 assists.
An All-State performer at Shelby County High, Casey averaged 28.5 points a game as the Rockets finished 33-1 and won the State Tournament. He was named honorary captain of the All-State team and Kentucky's "Mr. Basketball" for the Kentucky-Indiana series. He finished his high school career with 2,088 points in 96 games and headed Coach and Athlete Magazines' list of the nation's top 10 prep stars.
Casey is appearing on the home court tonight for the first time since March 8, 1969, when he scored 18 points and got 10 rebounds in an 84-69 victory over Tennessee.

'World's Winningest Collegiate Basketball Coach' (40 Years Won 836, Lost 177 82.5%)
Kentucky's legendary "Baron of Basketball" passed his 1,000th game as coach of the Wildcats during the middle of last season and the occasion was duly recorded and celebrated.
During the span which began with a 67-19 victory over Georgetown a week before Christmas in 1930, Rupp has garnered every major honor afforded his profession.
During the current season, he reigns as president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and is a full-fledged member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, having been inducted into that shrine at Springfield, Mass., in the spring of 1 969.
It is fitting that Rupp should occupy a hallowed niche in the Hall of Fame. During his collegiate days as a guard on two national championship teams at the University of Kansas, he was personally acquainted with Dr. Naismith, inventor of basketball and a faculty member at Kansas. Rupp's coach was the veteran Forrest Claire (Phog) Allen, who is past 80 and today lives quietly in retirement among his friends, souvenirs and memories in Lawrence, Kansas.
Rupp visited Allen during a weekend stay in Lawrence last spring.
The occasion was Commencement exercises at the University, where alumnus Rupp received the Distinguished Service Citation, highest honor the University and Alumni Association bestow. The citation was presented before a packed house in Allen Field House by Chancellor E. Laurence Chalmers.
The honor undoubtedly was a high point in a star-studded coaching, business and civic career which has elevated Rupp to the loftiest standing ever achieved by a collegiate basketball coach.
During the 1969-70 season, he overcame many unexpected and almost catastrophic setbacks to lead his team to the No. 1 rating in all national collegiate basketball polls.
The first blow came in the summer of 1969, when two-time All-SEC guard Mike Casey received a broken
leg (in three places) in an automobile accident and was out for the season.
Rupp also had foot trouble aggravated by diabetes and was ordered to bed as pre-season practice got under way. He left the bed only to attend practice sessions and utilized a foot rest during early season games.
Also during the season, All-SEC forward Mike Pratt received a broken nose, All-American center Dan Issel received a severe stone bruise which undoubtedly was a factor in the Wildcats' only regular season lossto Vanderbiltand two-year starter Larry Steele broke a wrist bone.
Despite the adversities, Rupp coached his team to its 25th SEC championship since the league was organized in 1 933. En route to their record 1 8th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats set or tied 17 team records and went on the book as the most potent offensive unit in the school's fine basketball history.
The 26-2 record brought Rupp's score to 836 victories against only 177 losses, an amazing 82.5 winning percentage against the best opposition the nation could offer.
The magic of Rupp naturally has resulted in an increasing demand for that most scarce Kentucky producta ticket to a University of Kentucky basketball game. For the past several years, there has been no public sale of the precious tickets; students, faculty, staff and holders of coveted season priorities are allotted the approximately 11,500 available seats and the waiting list grows longer and longer.
During the past spring and summer, a movement was instigated to determine the interest in a new "Rupp Arena" which would seat 28,000 for a basketball game. Thousands of computer cards, asking for pledges of so much money for the right to purchase tickets, were distributed throughout the state and the response was described as nothing short of tremendous, a fitting tribute to the "Baron of Basketball."

Henry Wilmore, a 6-4 forward, has tremendous inside moves and led the frosh with 23.1 points a game.
