A program opening the Hillbrook exhibit of presidential campaign memorabilia V I
will be held in Recital Hall of the Center for the Arts at 3:00 PM on Sunday, ·
October 12. Douglas Edwards of CBS News will deliver the main address. A
reception will follow the program and then the exhibit "Ballots and Bandwagons,"
will be officially opened for viewing in the Art Gallery.
On Saturday, October 18, at 10:00 AM, the papers of John Sherman Cooper will be g' A
Aformally presented to the University of Kentucky. The program, also to be . 1 ‘
Cheld in the Recital Hall of the Center for the Arts, will feature a slide/tape 7
show highlighting events in Cooper's career. Former Senators Thruston B.

Another upcoming program of interest is the Robert Penn Warren 75th Birthday
Symposium at the University 29-30 October. In addition to Warren and his .

The speaker will be Andrea Bryant who has just returned from New York where she
viewed the Picasso Exhibit among a thousand other things. She had a fascinating \

NEWS FROM THE JEFFERSON COM UNITY COLLEGE LIBRARIES. `
The Learning Resource Center of the new Southwest Campus of Jefferson Com unity .
College opened with a COM catalog produced by SOLINET. Since 1977, the Library l
has been inputing its holdings. The COM is also a union list of the collections
of both campuses--Downtown and Southwest. Student use and acceptance of the
catalog in microfilm form has been positive.

KENTUCKY SOLINET USERS GROUP
S On July 25 the Kentucky SOLINET Users Group held a program meeting here. Sixty
people attended, representing 17 different SOLINET member institutions in the
state.
Ken Thomas of SOLINET made a presentation on the network's COM catalog service. .
The Group also heard speakers from the University of Louisville and the Kentucky `
Department of Library and Archives discuss their libraries' uses of OCLC/SOLINET
for acquisitions and interlibrary loan.
At this meeting the Group adopted a constitution and by—laws and set membership
dues for the 1980/81 year. Individual dues are $3.00 and include all publications
or announcements of the organization and full voting privileges. Institutional
membership is $15.00. Anyone interested in the Group is invited--and urged--to

The fall meeting will be held in conjunction with KLA in Louisville at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel, Thursday, October 16, 1980 in the Oaks Room. Randolph Call will

LIBRARY AUTHOR
Vivian Hall is a joint author of "Bibliography of the Kentucky Geological Survey,
1839 through 1978" just published by the Kentucky Geological Survey.
Also she has just been granted $2,500 from Dow Chemical Company for annotating and
completing the bibliography on Brines, Evaporites and Salt. Completion is expected
for August 1981.
THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY SURVEY RESEARCH CENTER
The Center is preparing its fourth poll. This statewide telephone survey scheduled
for October-November 1980 will include a broad range of questions--from education to
health care to government services to cultural activities. All faculty and graduate
students are encouraged to submit questions which require the collection of state-
wide survey data. Those submitting questions should include a rationale of why the
questions should be part of the UK-SRC poll.
The Center plans to employ UK students and staff as telephone interviewers and
coders for the Poll on a part-time temporary basis. The pay is $3.25 an hour.
The actual interviewing will take place weekday evenings from 6 to 10 and weekend
afternoons from 1-5. If interested call the staff at 257-&684 no later than Friday,
October 10.
YALE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY INTERNSHIPS
Preservation and conservation internships are available for February-June 1981,
September 1981-January 1982, and February-June 1982. The internship provides a

 Mrs. Ellen Butler Stutsman, l902—l980
Mrs. Ellen Butler Stutsman, head of the Catalog Department from l932—l967,
died on August l3 after a long illness. She was born in Lexington May l8, l902,
the daughter of A.C. and Kate Butler. A graduate of Lexington Senior High School,
she received an A.B. degree from the University of Kentucky in l925. In l926 she
was granted a certificate from the New York State Library School, and in l944 she
was awarded an M.S. degree from the Columbia University School of Library Service.

The ACRL Microcard series.
from l926~28 she was first assistant to the director of the Kentucky Library
Commission in Frankfort. She returned to her Alma Mater in l928 to be assistant
cataloger in the University Library. In l932 she became head of the Catalog
Department, and held that position until her retirement in l967. During the
period, September l, l945 ~ December 3l, l945, she was acting librarian.
Mrs. Stutsman was head of the Catalog Department when card reproduction and
other tasks were done manually. She personally revised every card typed, and
every card filed in the catalogs. She also examined every book that left the
department.
In an era when travel money was scarce or nonmexistent, she took ner staff
to professional meetings. She was active in the Ohio Valley Group ef Catalogers.
Through her encouragement, many of her professional staff were active in this
group and its successor, the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Service Librarians.
An early advocate of professional development, she urged the junior members of
the department to do more and better things.
During her long tenure with the library, Mrs. Stutsman supervised a staff
with varied interests, abilities and personalities. She used the strengths
of each staff member to for  a strong department that supported the goals and
