ACTS Report: \ ‘
Three committees have recently been appointed by ACTS, the library
technician/clerical staff association. The committees are: Union Committee _
(to investigate beginning union activities on campus and their effect--
pro and con--on the library employee) including Katy Gallion, Joan =
Gatewood (chairperson), Roxanna Jones, Sarah Nash—Breckner, Lee Rowland,
Bronson Rnzier; Evaluation Committee (to investigate the evaluation
process and the resulting method of salary distribution) including ;
Peter Costich, Jean Goodrich, Jim Shaeffer, Joyce Taylor; and Library
Technician Education Committee (to investigate educational opportmities
for the library technician) including Sharon Blackburn, Diane Carrico
(co-chairperson) , Maggie Fitch, Pam Johnson (co—chairperson) , Cathy
Stevenson, Gary Stottlemeyer.
Gov't Docs sgnsors workshop: U
GPD will sponsor a documents workshop on 20 May from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
for the eighteen selective Federal depositories in Kentucky. .
King Librag Press seeks apprentices:
The King Library Press, Special Collections, University of Kentucky  
Libraries is offering a very limited number of apprenticeships for
the summer session beginning 16 June 1977. Those apprenticed will gain
practical experience in printing with the hand press, typesetting and
book design, case binding and paper decoration. Those engaged for the ‘
summer will be printing a new publication which we expect to see to
completion at the end of this session. .
Students (undergraduate and graduate) of the University of Kentucky
may earn credit for this work by arrangement with their departments. ;
Members of the University faculty and staff are most welcome. However, W
this program is not limited to persons with University of Kentucky
affiliations. We are sorry that all paid positions are filled at this
time. I
Due to the small number of apprenticeships open, those interested should
contact the director as soon aspossible. The Press is open from
9:00 — 5:00 weekdays. `
New SPEC Kit in Reference:
The M.I. King Reference Department has received another new Spec Kit,
published by the Association of Research Libraries. Entitled "Preparation _
and Presentation of the LIbrary Budget", the kit presents the results of I

a survey conducted to determine how ARL libraries prepare and present their
' budgets, which staff mexrbers are involved in the process, and what kinds of
data are developed to support budget requests. Anyone interested is
welcome to borrow the kit from reference for a few days.
Staff Picnic Planned:
The Library Staff Organization is planning a picnic for all library
staff and their families to be held Friday, June 10, 5:00 p.m. at
Jacobson Park. Sign-up sheets will be snet to all departments within
the next week. If you have not yet paid your LSO dues now is the
time to do so; fu1l—time staff -—- $1.00 for &e remainder of the year
and part—time staff (associate zvezrrbers) who work less than 32 hours
per week -— 50¢. Dues should be paid to Mary Welch, Cataloging
Department It/DZK~North.
Librag Trends:
Library Trends (vol. 25:2) contains a state—of—~the·—art review on
Employee Organizations and Collective Bargaining in Libraries. The
first section deals with the history of orgainzinq in libraries — the
first wave started befom World War One when librarians unionized. A
y Other sections deal with the effects of collective bargaining on the
library. Also included is a copy of the aqneetrent between Temple
University and AAUP for the librarians at Temple.

The Staff Room Committee finds itself washing up after a lot of
anonymous staff room patrons these days. They cordially request that
dishes and silver be washed, dried, and put away after each use and
that person using the staff room help maintain a clean and attractive
facility.
