THE POLITICAL BODY BORN YESTERDAY
Christened as such amid scenes of :xcitement Fever~Hot.

" "W~”vrTh inew party is born. It has been christened, The Union labor Party. ThiS'was not
accomplished without trouble and contention, but that does ;ot at this stage seem to detract
from the enthusiasm over the result. The Committee on Resolutions labored until late Tuesday
night and all of yesterday. heanwhile the conference, with nothing vital to do, opened the
safety—valve and allowed much of the pent-up indignation at the old political parties to
escape.

There was speech making and a good deal of it, as the detailed report below nill Show.
The women of Uisconsin and hichigan took part in the deliberations, and by good, thoughtful
addresses showed that in one respect at least they were the equals of the men present. It will
hardly be denied that Mrs. Karicn Todd, hrle.H. Severance, Ire, Eaton and lrs.Culbertson by
their speeches did much to secure the insertion of the woman suffrage plank in the platform.
Feb. 24 P 5 C 5 The Evenin étssion.

The Platform Eenorted and hotly Debated on Three Points.
Delegates were slow in assembling for the evening session, and it was a quarter to eight 'oclock
when the.oonference was called to order.

After several announcements had been made, Chairnad Streeter stated that the Committee
on ?lat orn and Yesoluticns had completed their lahors, and called upon Chairman Vohert Schilling
of Iilwaukec, to read the report. Kr. Schilling stated that perhavs it was necessary to make
some explanation of the delay. He said that there were many ideas that clashed, and the menhers
of the Committee, had "given and taken" with a view to hqrnonize all differences, He hoped
the members of the Conference would treat the report in the same spirit. To tell the truth,
he said, there were some things in the platform that he did not like, but he had conceded per-

- sonal views for the sake of harmony. The report was amended in only two respects— on the woman
suffrage quest on and on the name of the new party.

The Committee reported the name of the party a§"Commonersg The convention made it"Union
Lab r", fhe Committee reported a very indefinite wmman suffrage plank, and the convention made
a bold statement in favor of the reform.;;s adopted is as follows;,

V The delegates of various industrial and refnrm/Folitieal,0rganizations have assembled
from Thirty—One States and Territories on the/Anniversary of the birth of "The Father of-his
Country" to view the situation of public affairs and advise pro;er action.

A general disc;ontent prevails on the part of the wealth producers. Farmers and suffer—
ing from a poverty which has forced most of them to mortgage their estates, and prices of. L
eroducts are so low as to offer no relief except through/Bankruptcy. Laoorers are Sinking into
greater and greater dependence. Strikes are resorted to wit out bringing relief, because of

the inability of employers in many cases to pay living wages, while more and more are driven
into the streets.

Business men find collections almost impossible; meantime hundreds, wof millions of
idle public money, which is needed for relief, is locked up in the United States Treasury in
grim mockery of the distress. Lend monoply flourishes as never before, and more and more
owners of the soil are daily becoming tenafits. Greethransportetion,Corporations will sue-
ceed in extortin 3 their profits upon watered stock through unjwst charges.

The United States Senate had become in open scandal, its seats being purchased by
the rich in open defiance of the popular will.

A trifling fisherifibfdisoute i“ seized upon as an excuse for SQuendering public money
upon unnecessary, fiilitary preparations which are designed to breed a spirit of war to ape
European desnotism, and to empty the Treasury Without quing the public debt.

Under these and other alarming conditions we appeal to the people of this whole country
to come out of old party Organizations, whose indifference to the public welfare is respon—
sible for this distress, and help us to organize a new Political Party, not Vsectional, but
national, those members shall be called the Union labor forty, whéfle object shall be to repeal
all class laws in favor of the rich, and to relieve the distresrs of our Igdustries by es-
tablishing the foltowing Principles:
