ii The lpypptppy pf the County é£phiyes_pf_§eprgia is one of a number
}; of guides to historical materials prepared throughout the United States
Y§ by workers on the Historical Records Survey projects of the Work Proj~
.§ ects Administration. The publication herewith presented, the Record
lj Entries of an inventory of the archives of Lee County, is Volume ll of
fi Number 88 of the Georgia series.
f The Historical Records Survey program was undertaken in the winter
3 of 1935-36 for the purpose of providing useful employment to needy uncm-
% ployod historians, lawyers, teachers, and research and clerical workers.
,, In carrying out this objective, the project was organized to compile
§ inventories of historical materials, particularly the unpublished govern-
id mont documents and records which are basic in the administration of local
g governments, and which provide invaluable data for students of political,
T economic, and social history. Up to the present time approximately 2,000
g publications have been issued by the Survey throughout the country. The
Q archival guide herewith presented is intended to meet the requirements of
Q day~to-day administration by the officials of the county, and also thc
Q§ needs of lawyers, businessmen, and other citizens who require facts from
Q the public records for the proper conduct of their affairs. The volume
% is so designed that it can bc used by the historian in his research in
1; unprinted sources in the same way he uses the library card catalog for
j printed sources.
Q The inventories produced by the Historical Records Survey projects
g attempt to do more than give merely a list of records — they attempt fur-
; ther to sketch in tho historical background of the county or other unit
K of government, and to describe precisely and in detail the organization
g and functions of the government agencies whose records they list. The
2 County, town, and other local inventories for the entire country will,
g when completed, constitute an encyclopedia of local government as well
3 as a bibliography of local archives.
g The successful conclusion of the work of the Historical Records
3 Survey projects, oven in a single county, would not be possible without
Q the support of public officials, historical and legal specialists, and
§ many other groups in the community. Their cooperation is gratefully
f acknowledged.
Q The Survey program was organized by Luther H. Evans, who served as
{ Director until March l, l940, when he was succeeded by Sargent B. Child.
Q The Survey operates as a Nation—widc series of locally sponsored projects
f in the Service Division, of which Mrs. Florence Kerr, Assistant Commis-
i sionor, is in charge.
