l
VF. l. Kossa, Camp Grant
Civilian Head, Ran
Car Into Ditch.

An attempt to prevent an ap-
proaching machine from crashing
into his unlighted car stalled at
the side of the roadway cost Ar-
chitect J. M. Coleman, 6748 La-
fayette ave., Chicago, his life last
night four miles east of Rochelle
on the Lincoln highway, when
Frank I. Kossa, Camp Grant agri-
cultural department chief, swerv~
ed his Dodge auto to one side of
the road, escaping the Coleman
car but running down its owner.
Mrs. Coleman, wife of the victim,
jumped from danger while her
husband dodged in front of the

Kossa machine.

The Kossa machine, in which
Capt Klrby Green, Camp Grant
exchange officer, was riding,
brought up on its side in a ditch.
Kossa escaped with slight bruises,
while the army officer suffered a
wrenched back and was conveyed
to Lincoln hospital, Rochelle, for
emergency treatment. He was dis-
missed several hours later.

Gust E. Ekeberg, head of the Bike-
berg Dry Goods Co., of this city, who
with his Wife and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Ekcberg was returning from Chicago,
reached the scene directly after the ac-
cident. Unable to determine Whether
life remained in Coleman's inert body,
the local merchant unloaded his party
and brought the Chicago man's body
and Mrs. Coleman to the Rochelle hos-
pital. The victim was pronounced dead
by Dr. A. R. Bogus, who administered
relief to the widow, who was suffering
from nervous shock.
How Accident Occurred.
Mrs. Coleman told the Rockford man
and‘hospital authorities that she and
her husband had taken places on the
highway to flag the approaching ma—
chine, Mr. Coleman fearing their ma-
chine might be struck because it had no
lights. It was while both were waving
their hands in front of the Kossa car
lights that Coleman stepped into the
path of the Camp Grant man‘s machine.
Mrs. Coleman, it Was reported, stepped
lback behind her husband’s machine,
while Coleman advanced onto the road
1 Way.
‘ Koosa told the authorities that he
saw both figures in front of him and
upon discovering the darkened machine,
swerved to the left to avoid striking it.
Then Coleman seemed to follow his path
,and despite an effort to turn abruptly
‘from the read his car struck the Chi-
leagoan. He remained in Rochelle over
‘night after telephoning Camp Grant to
send another car to haul back his
wrecked one from the accident scene.

Capt. Kirby Green left Rochelle this
morning for Rockford, it was stated. at
Rochelle, but he had not arrived at
Camp Grant at noon today. Both he
and Kessa. were in Chicago Thursday
on government business and were on
their return trip home when the acci-
dent occurred.

(Continued on Page Twelve.)

 IN lNBULN Hflfi GfiflSH

(Continued from Page One.)

Capt. Druid Wheeler, Camp Grant
command r, was first informed of the
accident by The Republic this morning
and got in touch with Rochelle to ascer-
tain Whether his brother officer and the
agricultural chief clerk were seriously
injured.

Ekeberg Tells Story.

“My brother and his Wife and Mrs.
Elieberg and I were returning from
Chicago last night when we arrived at
the accident scene," said Gust Elie-
berg to a. Republic reporter.

”Upon seeing the disabled Dodge ma-
chine and a. party of excited autoists
attempting to revive Coleman. I volun-
teered to take him to the Rochelle hos-
pital. Mrs. Coleman accompanied the
body of her husband with the other
couple in the Colei 1 car, while my
party remained there until I could re-
turn. ‘

"I remember seeing what I thoughtl
was an army machine pass our car as
we were. pulling out of DeKalb and this i
car, it developed, was the one figuring
. in the accident. Capt. Green, the army
officer, refused my offer to take him to
’the hospital, stating that he was all
right, but as we reached Rochelle an-
”other car brought him there for treat
ment. He complained of severe pains in
the spine, due to being tossed out of
his machine, I believe.

“After doing what I could for the
bereaved Chicago party, I returned for ’
my p ssengers and we got to Rockford '
after midnight."

Inquest This Morning. _

Deputy Coroner Harrigan of Oregon
swore in a jury to investigate the
death this forenoon, the inquest being
held in the Rochelle city hall. Mem-
bers of the Coleman party testified that ;
they were enroute to.Dix0n, 111., to
spend the night. Mrs. Celeman stated
that her husband had a church commis‘
sion at Amboy and planned to attend
to certain business in that town todayz"

Frank I. Kossa, driver of the car
which struck Coleman, testified at the
session, but Capt 'rby Green was ex-
cused because of h s injuries. '

Return Open Verdict.

The jury investigating the death
brought in an open verdict shortly after
noon today, the finding being that “de-
ceased came to his death from a frac-
tured skull, presumably when his head
came in Contact with concrete pave-
ment, after he was struck by automobile
driven by Frank I. Kossa of Rockford.
Ill.”

Evidence introduced at the inquest
tended to show that Coleman had yelled
to relatives in. his parked machine to
jump when he believed that the Kossa
'car‘ would crash into the rear of his
own machine. Mrs. Coleman testified
that her husband had attempted to flag
down machines coming from the west
and turned around just when he saw.
the lights of the Camp Grant car com-
ing from behind

February 20, 1922.

Mr. David Segerstrom,

26 Rockwell Terrace,

Malden, Massachusetts.

My dear friend, Mr. Segerstrom;

It was a real pleasure to see you
the other day in my office, with my friend,
Mr. Carl Peterson. I want to see you in the
near future and talk with you about your plans
for further study. I hope that you are
planning to take further courses of study.

You are a young man with many years before you,
I hope, and we want you to make the most of
these early years of your ministry.

I was glad to find in Mr. Peterson
a real love for books, and a real hunger for
knowledge. God give you grace and wisdom and the
spirit of Jesus, to carry on the work which is

given you to do in Malden.

Cordially yours,
