”e have
since two weeks before
up and down. I mes one
cut dow1 my efficiency very much. But in a few weeks
will be here and the warmer weather..

If it isn't too late I want to make a small contribution
for the portrait of Professor Bonner. I am sorry it m st be this
small.

Perhaps you wonder how things are here,et Southern Methodist

out a large number

A

time. Our enrolment is somwha' smaller

faculty are in service . Also we are helped a little by

Program.. Financially we seem to be in sound condition.
ihe total number of students in Latin and Greek is not down much

but they are in fewer courses and sections.

A¥ittle over a year ago in the evening I started taking some

math courses, mainly because so many of the faculty wer doing it

so weak in math that Jimmy's questions were already
bothering 3 ma e an impression on the head of the math
Dept. and one course led to another. Last June I found myself teachmfi
a mathfiourse in summer school, and in July and Sept. more math courses
In fact the math Dept and the aoministration seem well sat‘sfied.
I realize that this teaching is harming me as a Greek scholar. It
takes an enormous amout of time. But it surely has stren;t

my position here end perhaps my prestige also.

 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA
VERMILLION

LATIN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Vermillion, bouth Dakota,
January 29,1944 -

Dear Miss Smith,

Sorry to be so slow in answering you,
for I really was delighted to hear from you and am
happy to have at least a small part in Mr. bonner's
portrait. I enclose a check for ten dollars and hope
to be able to do more later on if you need some more.
It is hard for me to think of Chicago without the
Bonners there, and I know all of us will take pleasure
in knowing the portrait is in Classics. His spirit is
such a real part of the place and all that it stands
for.

Mr. Prescott was gone in such a short
time after I saw you last springl ,

I hepe to get to the 9t. Louis meeting
this Spring. The pressure of my work. like that of
everyone else, is reaching the limit this year. I am
grateful at the way my Latin is holding up; though Greek
consists of a large class of pre-medics taking the
derivatives, Greek art, and survey of la terature in
translation. I do miss you very much, and shall be
happy when our paths cross again. It was good to hear
from the banners and Lloyd at Uhristmas time. It was
impossible to get in for A.P.A., so I sent in your name
as my proxy. Hope it will meet in Chéaago again when
there will be a better chance of getting there.

With every good wish to you, and thanks
again for letting me have a part in the portrait. Please
remember me to our mutual friends, for I think of you
all very often. '

Affectionately,

%WM
