I ELIZABETH HANSON, 1903-1981
I Elizabeth Hanson, head of the Serials Department from 1930-1967,
died on December 5, 1981. She was born on September M, 1903, in
winchester, Kentucky, and was the daughter of william N. and Irene
Redmon Hanson. She graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1921,
received an A.B. from the University of Kentucky in 1925, and received a
B.S. in Library Science from the University of Illinois in 1927.
Miss Hanson came to the University of Kentucky in June 1930, after
having been a cataloger at the University of Tennessee from 1927-1930.
She had been a Catalog Reviser at the University of Illinois in 1927.
She was active in campus, local, and professional organizations. ‘
She was twice president of the Business and Professional women's Club,
Lexington, Kentucky; Vice-President of the Kentucky Library Association;
Exhibit Chairman for the Kentucky Library Assocation Annual Meeting for
fifteen years; Editor of the KLA Bulletin; and, Secretary-Treasurer of
the Serials Section of the American Library Association. .
. Miss Hanson's sense of dedication to the Library and the University
was unequaled. Her pleasant personality, strong sense of humor, and
willingness to help was appreciated by faculty, students, and
colleagues.

LIBRARY ASSOCIATES BOOK SALE
1982 BOOK SALE SET FOR THURSDAY - FRIDAY, 22 - 23 APRIL ~
BUYERS / SELLERS NEEDED
Thursday and Friday, 22 - 23 April will be the dates for this
year's book sale, which will again be set up in the AIDS Room, first
floor of King Library - South.
This should be our largest yet, with great buys in books from all
fields. There will be an extensive group of 19th-century books of
special interest.
Volunteers are needed to help staff the sales tables. If you are
interested in helping, please call Ruth Vaughan in Collection
Development, 258-5895
Come and buy a bargain.
(Paper bags are needed for the sale. If you would like to donate some
paper bags (grocery bags, etc.) for the sale, please leave them with
Ruth Vaughan in Collection Development prior to April 22. I

to 25 participants, and approval of the employee's department head is

Fountain from the U.K. Department of Horticulture, who will give us some
pointers about vegetable gardening in this area. The program will be on

V EQUAL OPPORTUNITY PANEL APPOINTMENT
Bill James, Law Librarian has been reappointed to the Equal
Opportunity Panel by President Singletary. Bill's term will expire on
August 31, 1985.
APPLIED ANTHROPOLOGY PROJECT
Once again Special Collections and Professor John van Willigan of
the Anthropology Department have received some recognition for the work
being done in the control of the literature in this area. In the
February issue of REFERENCE AND SELECTION NEWS from the University gof
California over a page is devoted to the project. .
REAL ISSUES IN SOCIAL SECURITY
The College of Social Work; the University of Kentucky Graduate
School; Multidisciplinary Center on Gerontology; and the Council on
Aging present a free public seminar entitled "Real Issues in Social
Security" on April 2nd at 2 p.m. in the Student Center Theatre. The
featured speaker for this seminar is Eveline M. Burns, Professor
Bneritus, Columbia University School of Social Work. A reception
follows in the University Club Dining Room in the Student Center.

The AAUP will sponsor a panel to present several sides to IRA's.
The program will be a dutch breakfast held in the Student Center
Cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6th.
KLA
The combined Spring Meeting of the Academic and Special Libraries
Section of KLA will be at Cumerland Falls State Resort Park on April 15
and 16. The topic for this year's program is "Coping with Financial
Stress: Strategies for Librarians". If interested contact Tari Keller,
