ST. Pl‘i'l‘FRSBL‘RG, Fla. —— “hat is it
.ibout Duke and UK?

Six years ago former Duke star (Ihristian
l.aettner used an elementary turn—and—
slioot to steal a win from a deserving L'K
teaiti and in turn broke the hearts of tnany
in the Bluegrass.

But last night in an all-or—nothing
rematch with a trip to the Final Four in the
balance, L‘K seized control of both a sput-
tering Duke team and the evils of March 28.
1993, by edging the No. l—seeded Blue
Devils, 808-1».

Down 91—71 with less than 10 minutes to
go, Big Blue's hopes for another national
championship seemed all but extinguished.
The Blue Devils were on fire. scoring on
eight of their past It possessions. The (Eats,
in turn. had scored on just four oftheir last
l-l possessions.

The situation looked ditn for UK.

“For a while there, it seemed like it was
just three after three after three,“ UK guard
Jeff Sheppard said of Duke's early second-
half surge. “I thought it would never stop
but no one's ever seen a Kentucky team
quit."

“Duke kept hitting shots. but we kept
digging and digging and digging," forward
Allen Fdwards said. “It looked bad. but we
kept our heads up and kept working."

The work paid off. Though Duke con—
tinued to score. the (lats' offense started to
move. Point guard “'ayne Turner hit a free
throw after being fouled on a drive through
the lane. Then Sheppard scored on a drive.
Forward lleshiinu livans hit a three-point—
er. Then Scott Padgett hit frotn outside.
Then Turner was fouled as he hit another
drive down the lane.

L'K quickly whittled Duke’s once-imper—
meable 17—point lead to just eight in less
than four minutes.

“It looked pretty tough before we started
hitting those shots,“ said backup center
Alamaal Magloire. who has maintained
throughout the postseason that UK will win
the national championship. “But there was
no doubt in my mind that we would not lose
again this year."

.\lagloire‘s teammates remained confi—
dent in spite of a scoreboard that seemed to
maintain otherwise.

“\Ve knew if we would get sotne stops,
we could keep it going," said Fvans, who
finished with 14 points and II rebounds. “It
was just a matter oftime."

That time came with 2:12 remaining
when Lexington native Cameron Mills
grabbed a tipped rebound frotn Evans and
hit a three—pointer to give UK its first lead
at Bil—T").

“Fverything was just moving in slow
motion at that point," Mills said. “I swished
it and l pumped my fist and praised (iod. All

Police clad in black riot gear. Blue and red
lights flashing everywhere. Fireworks erupt-
ing skyward. ls it \Vatts? ls it lrishtown?

Nope. It's \Voodland Avenue in March.

The corner of F.uclid and “'oodland
hosted its fourth block part ' in three years
last night following UK's F. ite Fight victo-
ry over Duke. The 86-84 win clinched the
(Iats‘ third—straight Final Four berth and
avenged the program's most bitter defeat. a
llH—ITH overtime loss to Duke in the WQZ
Fast Regional Finals.

\Vithin minutes of the final horn, thou—
sands of students converged on the corner
in a drunken eupho ia.

(lhants of “Final Four" ricketed through
the intersection as the crowd grew.

jonathan Santamassino. a physics junior,
said his three years of \\'oodland celebra»
tions have been wild.

“This is unbelievable. a Final Four every
year." he said. “I‘m in shock."

Santaniassino said the feeling was
beyond words. The difference was the (iats'
opponent. He called the win payback for
I‘Nl's lieartbreaker.

“This is the place to be if you love has»
ketball." he said.

Nursing sophomore Belle-Fair (iraves
didn‘t bother hiding her hatred of the Blue
Devils. \Vl‘lllc‘ the crowd around her chanted
“\\'ojo sut ks." in honor of Duke point guard
Steve \\'ojcicchow ski. she explained her dis—

taste.
“I just don't like them." she said. “Duke
slicks."

(lraves surveyed the wild gathering of

her classmates and said. “This is what [K is
all about. It's what everybody loves. and it‘s
why a lot of people come here."
She couldn't say enou h about the
resiliency ofthe 1997-98 \Vililcats.
“Nobody's got a heart like L'K." she said.
jeff Brittingham has had an iin ressive
run at the \Voodland intersection himself.
The plant and soil science sophomore said
his first great memory of the block celebra-
tions was the I996 NCAA Championship.
“Now it (storming otit to \Voodland and
Fuclid) is almost like a tradition," he said.
As a ['K student climbed the crosswalk

signal next to Steak Fest. Brittingham let
loose his painful memory of l.aettner‘s shot.
“\Vhat goes around comes around.
baby." he said.
At the center of the pandemonnim, a

pair of students elevated by the shoulders of

the person underneath them began a ses—
sion of(I—A-'li~S cheers. A jacket hung frotn
a Fuelid powerline, while a pair of blue
jeans draped the \\'oodland wires.

Political science junior Brian Riddell
stood smiling a few steps away wearing a
jamal Mashburn replica jersey. lle reinem«
bers sitting in his parents' basement in
Frlanger. lsy.. in I‘NZ. crying from the pain
of Laettener‘s shot.

“I've waited six years for this night. and it
feels great," Riddell said.

I/VILD TIMES

By 0. Jason Stapleton

.\'udity is good.

U 'I/d Things has plenty of nudity, therefore
it has one thing going for it even ifthe plot and
acting sticks.

\Vhile the acting and plot aren't horrible.
they're definitely not anything to write hotue
about.

The tnovie takes place in the ritzy yachting
cotntnunity of Blue Bay, Fla” and centers
around Sam Lombardo (Matt Dillon). Suzie
'l‘oller (Neve (Iampbell) and Kelly Van Ryan
(Denise Richards).

Dillon plays the tnodel educator. He is
hard-working, genuinely cares about his stu-
dents and above all else is hottest, because
when the sultry Kelly takes an interest in him,
he deftly fends offher rather forward advances.

That is. until the day Kelly corners him in
his home in a dripping wet, white T—shirt.

The film then abruptly cuts away showing
the outside of Sam's house with Kelly running

, hysterically from the house, T-shirt now torn.

Rape allegations soon follow and turn Sam's
world inside out. He is forced front his home
upon which the bank foreclos-
es, and the job he loves so
much is stripped because the
school board put him on pro- t
bation before he was ever
called to trial.

it doesn‘t look like there will
be a trial however, because the
detectives on the case (Kevin
Bacon and Daphne Rubin—
\'ega) believe Kelly tnight be **

are answered tnuch too quickly to let any sus—
pense develop.

from this point it seems that director
john .\lc.\'aughton iust tries to see how
many loops he can throw at the audi—
ence.

There are sex scenes, (although not
as many as the previews would have you
believe) murders and various other
underhanded dealings that go on and
are not fully explained until the very
end ofthe movie,

Don‘t get up as soon as the credits

making the whole story tip. (om office) start to roll, however, because the conv

lCnter Suzie. who also fusing story is fully explained in out‘
brings rapeallegationsagainst takes after the credits begin. 'lhat's
Sam. which seem to make the ‘I'Vild Tbings’ probably just .\lcNaughton‘s way of
case air—tight, because it is d’lamldlay telling the audience that they‘re too

made very apparent that the
affluent Kelly and the white-
trash Suzie do not get along at all.

'l'hings don't really blow up until the hearing.
and then the plots go through so many twists that
it’s hard to figure out who is coming and going.

(iertain questions arise out of the trial that

stupid to figure the ending out for
themselves.
If this movie sounds like a soap opera. that's
because it is.
'l'his movie gets the iob done with lots of
nudity. but goes too over the top with the plot
and poor acting.

must be true.

“The ghosts have been lifted," the L'K
equipment manager said. “No longer do we
have to mention Christian Laettner's shot.
And I'm glad because I didn't want to see that
go on any longer."

The legendary 72-ye.ir4iltl is possibly the

his hoops since 1962, gone to six Final Fours,
witnessed two national championships as a
staff member and has an honorary jersey
retired in the rafters ofRupp Arena.

But yesterday in St. Petersburg ranks near
the very top ofhis personal L'K moments.
