The Book as Art, An Exhibition at the University of Kentucky Art
Museum, Center for the Arts. (September 19)
This fall the University of Kentucky will acquire its two-
millionth volume. To celebrate this achievement the Museum has
organized an exhibition of rare and beautiful books from the
library collection.
For centuries books were respected as the embodiments and
transmitters of civilization. Today they are all too often taken
for granted. Modern paperbacks are consumable commodities,
simple sources of facts and figures to be used and discarded.
This exhibition demonstrates that fine books continue to
have an aesthetic as well as practical dimension. Through these
masterpieces of book art, dating from 1400 to 1977, we hope
visitors will discover the enduring delights of fine materials
and loving craftsmanship, of thoughtful page layout, elegant
, typography, painstaking printing, and luxurious binding.
