     The following officers were elected by ballot, for the
ensuing year:

      On motion of President Patterson Mr. Gathright was
unanimously elected chairman of the Board of Trustees for
the entire year.


      On motion the Board adjourned to meet at 8 A. M.
June 3, 1897.


     The Board met pursuant to adjournment at 8 As M.

     The minutes of the faculty which had been read on
June 1st, were approved.


      Judge Riddell read the following:


          " The Committee on Buildings and Grounds would
report in addition to their former report that the rooms in
the Experiment Station should be painted in such color as
may be directed by the Director of said Station.


      We neglected to say in our former report that the
boilers in old engine house are in the opinion of the
engineer unsafe, worn out and ought to be replaced.   We
recommend thebe improvements.'

      President Patterson offered the following:


      as Resolved by the Board of Trustees that they have
heard with deep regret of the death of Miss Atkins, a member
of the senior class, upon the eve of graduation, whose youth,
talents, and acquirements all gave promise of a useful and
ah honorable life. The Board desire to record their sense
of the loss sustained by the College, by the Alumni, by
the community, and that they hereby through the Secretary
of the Board express to the bereaved family their

sympathy and condolence in their affliction. '

      Resolution adopted.


      Mr. Gooding moved to reconsider the motion of June
1st. which determined that a diploma should not be given
to Miss Atkins at Commencement June 3rd,

      Carried.


      On motion of Mr. Gooding ordered that a properly
signed diploma transmitted by the President, to the parents
of Miss Atkins.


      The motion of June 1st, relative to examinations and
conferring of degrees was re-adopted.


      General Hobson read the following:

         " We the Committee on Salaries respectfully report
that we find a diversity of opinion as to the reduction of
salaries but are unwilling to report on the subject and
refer the matter back to the Board of Trustees."

      After considerable discussion and the reading for
information only of the report of the Committee on Salaries
submitted on December 6, 1893, the foregoing report was
received and ordered to be filed.

      President Patterson offered the following:

          " Resolved that the salary of Prof. Matthews who
for five years was as a regular Professor in receipt of
$1800.@0 and who is now in accordance with the legislation
of the Board in 1893 entitled to $2000, $1100 shall be paid
out of the funds of the College and $900 out of the funds
of the Experiment Station."


      Carried.


      The Business Agent stated to the Board that the
appropriation, last year for the traveling expenses of
students was too small.


      Mr. Todd move'd that an appropriation of $250 be made
for student's traveling expenses.


      Carried by ayes and noes as follows:


      Aye - Flournoy, Gooding, Hines, Hobson, Matthews,
Patterson, Riddell, Spurr, Todd.


      No - None.


      An aye and no vote was called on the appropriation of
$600, for extending and repairing.the greenhr)use.

      Mr. Spurr moved that Mr. Brownts salary as Instructor
in elocution be increased from $300 to $4O0 per year and that
he be allowed $100 for leading the music in Chapel.


      Carried by ayes and noes as follows:


      Aye - Gooding, Hines, Hobson, Patterson, Riddell, Spurr,
Todd, - 7.


      No - Boswell, Flournoy, Kennedy, Peak, - 4.


      Mr. Matthews not voting.

      Mr. Peak entered the room at 9:40 A. M.


      On motion of Mr. Flournoy ordered that, in the event
Professor Nelson fails to offer his resignation, the Executive.
Committee be authorized to declare the chair of Civil Engineer-
ing vacant, and to fill the place on the advice of the
President.


      On motion of Mr. Boswell ordered that the President be
authorized to correspond with various persons with a view
to making an appropriate selection for the chair of Civil
Engineering, and also that he communicate with a number
of persons concerning an Assistant in Electrical
Engineering.


      On motion ordered that the selection of an Assistant
in Electrical Engineering be referred to the Executive
Committee with power to act.

     Mr. Boswell submitted the following:


     " To the honorable Board of Trustees
              A. and E. College,

      The undersigned committee on the Minutes of the
Executive Committee beg leave to report to your body the
following:


      1st. Your Committee think it was wise and just on the
part of the Executive Committee in paying Mrs. Blackburn,
her salary for the month of January 1897 less the amount
paid the substitute furnished by her.


      2nd. Your Committee is of opinion that the financial
condition of the College is not such as to warrant the
erection of a dormitory for young ladies and we therefore
disapprove of same.


      3rd. We your Committee feel a deep appreciation of
the long, faithful, and efficient services of Dr. R. J.
Spurr to this College and we heartily approve of the
allowance made to his widow for a full month's salary
for Dr. Spurr, for March 1897.


      4th.   In view of the extreme hard times and financial
depressTo-n now existing as well as the scarcity of funds
available for College expenditures your committee approve
the action of the Executive Committee in not making
any appropriation for defraying the expenses of the
Alumni banquet and are opposed to any such being
made.

     5th. In the matter of the attendance of members
of the faculty at Chapel services your committee appreciate
the fact that the regular attendance upon their part at
such services would be very beneficial to the students
and result in good to the religious and social condition
of the College, and we sincerely trust they will attend
said exercises, but we regard the question as a matter of
some moment and are reluctant to recommend an adequate remedy
for absences.


     We therefore, refer the matter to your body without
recommendation as to same.
