Dear Mr. Dunbar:
I wish to submit this report of the outstanding features of the work
of the Y. M. C. A. for the year just ended.
The problem of help was unusually acute because of labor problems, general-
ly, and the fact that three of my assistants were called in the "draft“ and the social
Secretary resigned to take 1. M. J. A. Canteen work in France.
At present we have one very efficient assistant in Mr. Harris, and we have
the promise of Mr. 0. T. Nicholson to take up his work Feb. lst. A competent janitor
has been employed to begin work Monday, Jan. 15th. This will give us an efficient
staff that ought to greatly enhance the work of the Association.
A few summaries taken from our monthly social activities reports: 602 men
and women attended the senior bible classes in Sunday School taught by the i. M. o. A.
Secretaries. 18,355 people attended the moving picture shows. we are running a high
grade of educational, dramatic, patriotic and comedy pictures. 1,112 girls attended
cooking and sewing classes, Camp sire, and Blue bird Meetings. hegular lessons in
the preparation of food are given the cooking classes, and definite instructions in
sewing and materials in the sewing clasres. The Camp sire and nlue bird meetings
are designed to hold up a high ideal of Christain womanhood before the girls.
657 calls were made by the social secretary, on such missions as giving
attention to the special needs of the family where sickness prevails and the children
are left helpless in their umkept condition . Very frequently the children are
washed and provided with clean clothes. A number of cases were discovered where they
had goods in the house for sufficient clothing but could not cut and sew them. our
Social Secretary looks after all such cases and sees that they are cared for.
3,285 people attended Sunday afternoon services at the Y. m. C. A. where
we conducted informal song service; had patriotic and relig’ous talks and ran educa—
tional and patriotic pictures.
During the year we purchased a player piano for the colored branch, a lamp
and arc lamp for both moving picture machines. A water heater was placed in the
white branch. A Red Cross flag, a hed Triangle flag, and an American Flag were
presented to the camp. A tent 30 x 60 ft. was erected and equipped just in the rear
of the building for the purpose of serving refreshments. This proved a great social
center for the people of the community during the hot summer evenings. Men would
come out with their whole families and young people would gather in groups about the
tables for refreshments and social intercourse. In fact the tent was (ar more
successful socially than financially. All these special improvements were purchas-
ed at a cost of $787.00 to both branches. Notwithstanding the fact that the buildings
were closed for over a month during the epidemic of Influence, and the fact that
the year 1917 was closed with a deficit of $66.00, we. closed this year with a profit
of over @800.00 after making the above mentioned improvements. We have two very
concrete object in view for the near future. The first is to build up a musical
organization in both branches. In connection with the band a competent instructor
, has been engaged, but has been unable to come on account of sickness. The other is
