House No.45 was reported on fire about 11:40 A.M.
December 2vth.This fire was in a clothes closet and must of been
started from an open light.
I inspected chiwney and wiring in this building
and found them to be in good condition. All hose was used from
No.5 House house.
The approximate cost to repair this building and
put in firs class condition will amount to about $25.00

Thursday February 8th.1954. This fire was caused by having a paper
carten which contained excelsior under House.
Small c010rd boy was playing with matches and threw a lighted match
into this paper carton.
No fire ecuipenent was used and no damage to this building.

Regular inspection of Benham and Mines was made on February
27—2S and March l.
Watch Service
All dials from 5 watch routes were inspected and men are per-
forming their duties punctually and no omissions found.

All fire hydrants were in apparently good operating order.
Hose houses were fully equipped.
Motor hose wagon was in condition for immediate use and motor
turned on daily.
Inside hose in all buildings was properly racked and nozzle
key operative.
All soda and acid and foam extinguishers have been recharged
within one year and readily accessible.
Carbon tetrachloride l quart and l gallon were full and in
operating order. Note: This includes the l gallon extinguish-
ers at Mine Substations.
Fire doors in Store and Supply Buildings were free to operate
automatically and properly fused.

Changes Noted
The number of 2-1/2 gallon fire extinguishers in Store has been
increased to two per floor, and in Market one has been installed
at first floor and one in basement. This now complies with in-
surance requirement to give full credit.
The hose standpipes in Store, Club and Hotel have been increased
to E" where needed.
The Pipe Fitting Department has been removed from basement of
Hotel to former Colored Lodge Building.
All exposed woodwork in projecting booth at Theatre has been
tinned and projection openings have been provided with heavy gauge
sheet steel slides arranged to close automatically in case of fire.
Remarks
The matter of moving the fire hydrant located across street from
Fire Station, this due to the widening of street: If it is de-
cided to make this change would recommend it be reset just east
of Fire Station and connect to main running north nearby.
Was pleased to find the Piping Department removed from basement
of Hotel, as it greatly improves the fire hazard. Also there
was an improvement in housekeeping at Mountain View House, in
fact there appears to be a general improvement throughout build-
ings, and no doubt due to the periodical inspections. We fully
realize that results are obtained only by continually stressing
the necessity of disposing of waste material and cleanliness,
which when done well does much to relieve the chance of fire,
which many times has its origin in waste or unclean conditions.
