Referring to your letter of January 10th to Mr. C. F.Biggert
reporting a fire in cow barn at house 419 at 11:30 P.M. on
January 3rd:
Mr. Biggert has discussed this fire with the writer and,
as you did not go into detail, we are asking for additional
information.
According t» the Benham maps this house No.4l9 is located on
Railroad Avenue, and as you state that the hose was used from
hose house No.3l, which is located on Cumberland Avenue, and
No.32 on Railroad Avenue, was this equipment used by residents
of the vincinity, or by the fire department? It always has
been a question in my mind as to whether the fire siren lo-
cated near No.l Mine could be heard at west end of town under
adverse wind conditions. The points I wish to clear are —-
was the alarm sounded, and if so did the motor hose cart re-
spond, and approximately the time before the hose truck reached
the scene of the fire, and also as to how many men responded.
We note you state that the cause of the fire is unknown. Have
you since that time been able to determine the origin? It is
always desirable, if possible, to determine the cause of a fire
as it is valuable in knowing where fire hazards exist, and
thereby profit where like conditions may cause a fire.
The loss in the burning of this cow barn did not amount to much,
but if in the future you should happen to have a fire in one of
the dwellings it may be that human lives may be sacrificed.
Therefore lies the reason of the inquiry as to whether the alarm
was heard through the town so the fire department could respond
promptly. We would be pleased to have you go into this matter,
and advise as much in detail as possible concerning same.
