Things will look a little diﬁerent in the
UK huddle this season.

“We‘ve had some changes in our staff.“
said UK coach Tubby Smith. “In addition
to adding David Hobbs and Reggie Hanson
in the summer. we have now lost George
Feitrm to the Indiana Pacers.”

Former associate head coach George
Felton departed after he took an assistant
coaching job with the NBA’s Indiana Pac~
ers. New Indy coach Isaiah Thomas made a
move to add him to his coaching staff.

“With that change. I‘ve elevated Reggie
(Hanson) to a full-time assistant. That
means he’ll be able to go out on the road re-
cruiting. We‘re doing this on an interim
basis and see how it goes.” Smith said.

Felton had three seasons at UK and
“{2}; a part of the 1998 NCAA championship
s .

“He‘ll be sorely missed. because he‘s
done. such an outstanding job not just in
recruiting, but in all aspects of coaching.‘
Smith said.

To replace him, two assistant coaches
have. been added to Smith‘s bench.

Assistant coach David Hobbs is re
united with coach Smith after the pair
worked together as assistant coaches in
the early '805 at Virginia Commonwealth
University.

Hobbs joins Kentucky after a tvmyear
absence from the game, though his experi-
ence includes 15 years at Alabama. of
which three were as head coach.

UK also welcomes home fan-favorite
and four-year letter winner Reggie Hanson.

Originally brought in as director of
basketball operations, Hanson was named
as an assistant coach by Smith Oct. 19 after
Felton’s departure.

UK shot a dismal 42.3 per-
cent from the ﬁeld last season,
the team's worst mark since
the 196263 squad tallied a 40.5
percent success rate. Equally
as disappointing was the fact
that the Cats’ shot a terrible
29.2 percent from three-point
range, the worst since the arc
was adopted for the 1987
season.

The coach feels things will

change for the better. Smith
hopes that UK's veterans will
improve and that the skills of
the newcomers will manifest
themselves.

“J.P. Blevins, Saul Smith
and Todd Tackett are all better
shooters than their effort
showed last year. and with the
addition of Gerald Fitch, Cory
Sears and Marquis Estill,
those percentages should
rise," Smith said of the Cats‘
improvements.

Such a development would
do nothing but expand the
Cats' already considerable
reach.

“I like people who are loyal.
Reggie is very talented and has
already shown a tremendous
work ethic.”

Hanson is deﬁnitely loyal.
During his playing career at
UK, an NCAA investigation re-
sulted in UK being banned from
postseason play for two years.
Hanson still had two years re-
maining and everyone expected
him to jump ship - he shocked
everyone and stayed, ﬁnishing
his collegiate basketball career
with UK.

He has spent the last eight
years of his career plying his

trade in Japan‘s basketball
league, six of which were as
player-assistant coach. In
Japan he averaged 20.6 points,
8.7 assists and 3.3 assists per
game. He also recorded 1.6
blocks and 2.6 steals a game.

Hanson had a distin-
guished playing career at UK.
He still ranks as No. 34 on the
all-time scoring list for UK and
has the honor of being in the
1.000-point club. During his ju-
nior and senior years, Hanson
led the team in rebounds,
blocked shots and steals on his
way to accumulating 1,167 ca~
reer points.

Despite the changes, Smith
has no worries.

“I think we have an excel-
lent staﬁ'. and the work is heavy
right now with the changes and
so much to do,” Smith said.

side the paint, but UK‘s back-
court should provide more
depth and experience. McDole
has improved her outside game
as a starter at small forward
and Adams and Young give UK
two immediate options at point

Freshman Kristin Connol-
ly is a likely replacement to
Wait at shooting guard. Her
outside shooting ability has
been chronicled by Mattox and
the UK coaching staff.

Still, UK’s youth and inex-
perience outweigh the opti-
mism of their potential, but
with less pressure to contend
the Cats will not disappoint
again and can only surprise.

“This is a young basketball
team, but the thing I like about
them is they will be tip for any
challenge we put up to them,"
Mattox said. “But we have to be
patient."

years old." Smith said. “By the

Keith Hogans loves the spot
light. He'll even tell you that if
he was ttot playing college bas-
ketball he would be a movie star.

Hogans is not bashful and
his confidence is something the
UK team needs after last year's
early NCAA 'I‘ournament exit.

The 6-foot-3 sophomore
guard has plenty to be confident
about too. He averaged lift
points. 3.6 rebounds aitd became
the ﬁrst ever Wildcat to post
three consecutive 20-point games
last season. He also set a [K
freshman record with IT steals.

This year Hogans has dedi
cated himself to becotnittg more
consistent and dominant His off
season revelations started with a
new diet and ended with a slim
titer and trimtner physique.

“Basically I just worked out
this summer and watched what l
ate." he said.

Hogans arrived in Lexington
a year ago at 195 pounds. bttt
gained up to tilt pounds over his
freshman year. He weighs 207.
pounds now. (‘oach Tubby

thing I want to rush."

“I've been looking forward

once or twice a week on the

Hogans was given a chance

limelight

"I enjoy being the go-to-guy
arid now that I have the opportu-
nity I'm going to take advan-
tage of it." he said.

New recruits add needed depth

plagued the Cats last year looks
like it will not be repeated this
season as (‘oach Tubby Stnith
has added six new freshmen
and is boosted by the return of
sophomore forward Marquis

The recruitment of forward
.lason I’arker could prove the
slirewdest move of Smith's I‘K
career so far. He graduated
frotn West (‘harlotte High
School atid then spent an extra
year in prep school after being
named a parade All-Aitierican
his senior year.

"He's really physical
