Q
,1 The Inventory of Federal Archives in the States is one of the pro-
g ducts of the work of the Survey of Federal Archives, which operated as
1 a nation-wide project of the Works Progress Administration from January
) 1, 1936 to June 30, 1937, and has been continued since that date as a
`§ unit of the Historical Records Survey, also operating as a nation-wide
11 project of the Works Progress Administration, and a group of state or
? local projects of that Administration. _
Q The plan for the organization of the Inventory is as follows: Series I
? 1 consists of reports on the administration of the Survey, acknowledge- 1
5 ments, and general discussions of the location, condition, and content *
Q of federal archives in the states. Succeeding series contain the de-
{ tailed information secured by workers of the Survey, in inventory form, 1
Q a separate series number being assigned to each of the executive depart- I
1 ments (except the Department of State) and other major units of the
Q Federal Government. Within each series No. 1 is a general introduction
3 to the field organization and records of the governmental agency con- 1
1 cerned; the succeeding numbers contain the inventory proper, separate y
numbers being assigned to each state in alphabetical order. Thus, in 1
each series, the inventory for Alabama is No. 2, that for Arizona, No. 1
3, that for Arkansas No. 4, etc.
1 Information from the local offices regarding each series, or unit of 1
1 related records, is presented in the following order: title, inclusive 1
i dates ("te date" indicating an open file at the time the information was
E secured), a general description of content and system of filing or index-
j ing (if any), a statement of frequency and purpose of use, form of the 3
1 record itself (bound volumes, sheets in folders, etc.) linear footage,
j type of containers, physical condition of records (not stated if satis-
, factory), location by room, and finally, the number of the Form 58SA on p
{ which the content was originally recorded by a survey worker and from E
j which it was later abstracted for the Inventory. This form is on file _
M in the National Archives. Whenever it contains substantial details on ;
Q addenda sheets not included in the mimeographed abstract, indication of 1
, such fact is given by use of the reference: "See addonda." !
In Georgia the work of the Survey was under the direction of Professor 1
1 Merritt B. Pound from its inception until June 30, 1937. Since that time 1
% the project has been under the supervision of Mr. Raiford J. Wood, State *
3 Director of the Historical Records Survey in Georgia. This Inventory of j
1 the records of the Department of the Treasury in Georgia was prepared in 1
Q the Atlanta office of the Survey and was edited before final typing by
1 Dr. Erik Achorn of the Washington office. It.is reproduced in mimeographcd
{ form through the facilities of the Historical Records Survey.
