ABOUT THE LIBRARIES:
LIBRARY PASTE; OR, LET'S ALL STICK TOGETHER.
This may be the only foolproof recipe in the world. You cannot, absolutely
cannot, go wrong.
l. In a saucepan mix 4 tablespoons flour with l cup cold water. One
teaspoon of alum may be added for extra cohesiveness but is not necessary.
2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. You can use an egg-
beater if the flour is lumpy. Cook until mixture is just below the boil.
3. Add one cup of boiling water. This will cause the mixture to
thicken fast.
4. When paste boils, remove from flame.
5. Add l teaspoon sugar which gives a fixative quality. You may add
at this time a drop of oil of cloves. This gives a pleasant aroma to the
paste but does not affect the consistency.
Keep paste in a covered jar in the refrigerator where it should last
several weeks. When disposing of old paste (in time it will get moldy) wash
it down the drain with water to prevent clogging. The paste can be used hot
` or cold and will work if it's thick or thin. After making it by recipe several
times, you'll probably relax on measuring and realize that the formula works
and that the only necessity is to boil the ingredients. It is basically the
same process used in making gravy or cream sauce.
