Mr. Wood was a farmer and slaveowner in the Blue
Spring Grove area, Barren County, Ky. After his
first wife (Mildred 3/14/1817-12/3/1865) died, he
married (in 1867) his deceased brother John B.
Wood's wife, Mollie Wood (1/20/1836-8/18/1914).

H/21/1867 Indenture of apprenticeship, and undated attachment.
The document of indenture indicates that Robert F.
Wood 1/21/1867 legally made an apprentice of a 14 yr.
old orphaned son of a former negro slave. The undated
attachment is Wood's response to a writ of habeas
corpus demanding that he free the boy on the ground that
Wood is not having the boy taught how to read and write,
as specified by the indenture of apprenticeship. Wood
claims that, irrespective of the clearly specified
terms of the indenture, the court, at the time the
indenture was sanctioned, gave him a choice of either
paying the boy $100 upon expiration of the indenture
at age 21, or have him taught how to read and write.
Wood agrees to deliver the boy to any court appointed
guardian rather than teach him how to read and write
as well as pay him $100 upon expiration of the indenture.
