Mary Ann Truman Rogers, 1785-5/22/1822, are buried
in a miniature plot surrounded by a wrought iron fence
about 200 yards southwest of the junction of U.S.
Highway 31E and Kentucky State Highway 70. This
junction, known as Griderville, is about 1.5 miles
north of the Bagby—Rogers Cemetery. Bird Rogers'
father, Bird Rogers (Sr.), l735i—1800, moved from
Albemarle Co. Va., to Fayette Co., Ky., where he
died. The latter's sister, Ann Rogers, 1729(?)— p
1798, was the mother of Gen. George Rogers Clark, 4
1752-1818, the frontiersman and military officer.]
17. Nancy E[1izabeth]., Wife of W[m.] B. Rogers,
6/20/1806-8/6/1889. [Nancy was the daughter of John
and Matilda Bagby, nos. Q & 5 above.]

and wife. The wife, however, survived the husband

Sarah M[oss].Rogers, [Born] 11/6/1843- [no date for
her death. She was a neice of Virginia Wood Bagby,
no. 1 above, i.e., Sarah M. Rogers' mother (Ann
Elizabeth Wood Forbis) was a younger sister of
Virginia W. Bagby.]
Charles B. Rogers, 5/20/1840-2/22/1919. [He was
another son of Wm B. and Nancy E. Rogers, nos. 16 &
17 above. Like three of his brothers, no. 15 above,
he served in the Confederate States Army, i.e., in
Co. C., Second Regiment Cavalry, Kentucky Volunteers,
under the command of the then Col. John Hunt Morgan.
He was dressed in his Confederate uniform at the time
of burial.]

tombstone, a small, thin slab of whitish rock, was
inscribed with neither a birth nor death date.
Because the stone was broken into pieces, it was
replaced with a regular grave marker in 1990.]

of Charles R. Yancey, no. 13 above, and grandmother
of the Wilson's children, nos. 19-23 below. Martha
Yancey's brother-in-law, Jechonias Yancey (d. 1820),
was married to Mildred Wood, presumably an aunt of
Robert F. Wood, no. 6 above.]

[James Willson (sic) was the husband of Martha Wilson,
no. 15 above. The phrase "Don[e] by Their Only Child"
suggests that the two sarcophagi, nos. 15 & 16, were
installed by W.M. Wilson. Yet because he was an
infant upon the death of his parents, he perhaps
had the sarcophagi installed years later -- unless

his guardian, John B. Wilson, no. 17 below, had them
built in the name of his infant ward. John B_ wilson and
James Willson [sic] were brothers married to two Yancey
sisters. One of the brother's markers has an incorrect
birth date.

north 5.8 miles to Horton—Rigdon Rd. Turn right (east) on Horton-
Rigdon Rd. Go 1 mile to farm entrance—gate on left (north) side
of road. Cemetery is on top of a hill about .35 mile directly
northwest of gate.

The following names, dates, and other personal infor-
mation concerning the individuals buried in the Baird and
Davis Cemetery in the 19th and 20th centuries follow in
sequence from no. 1 to no. 18 corresponding to the numerical
sequence of the tombstones diagrammed on the cemetery sketch
on the preceding page.
Certain entries include annotations within square
qbrackets [] to identify more clearly an interred individual
or to clarify his or her relationship to some other interred
party or to some figure outside the cemetery. The bracketed
annotations do not appear on the tombstones,.
For the sake of brevity, the format of the birth and
death dates appearing on the actual tombstones is sometimes
abbreviated below so that an original date such as November
15, 1862, may be abbreviated 11/15/1862.
The style and apparent vintage of the 14 inscribed
tombstones in this cemetery suggest that the first marker
bearing a name was not installed before the death of
GershOu1Baird (no. 6 below) in 1882. The next one, for
Loretta E. Baird Smith (no. 16 below), was apparently not
installed until her death in 1898. Thereafter, the 10
individuals who died between 1886 and 19hl seem to have had
no permanent headstones—unti1 after the death of Nell B.
Davis (no. 15 below) in 1941. That is, all 10 individual
headstones, the common memorial for both the Baird and
Davis families (no. 8 below), as well as the two headstones
for Eugene and Gershom Davis (nos. lh & 18 below), who died
after Nell Davis, seem to be of the same recent vintage,
and all are cut in the identical style and color of granite.
Presumably the four rocks (nos. 1,2,3 & 17) that bear
no inscription or marking are headstones for persons who
died before the headstone for Gershom Baird was installed
upon his death in 1882.

together are for William Baird (2/24/1760-10/30/1855)
and his wife, Jane Hunt (11/5/1769-9/3/1856), i.e., the

Mary Elizabeth Baird Aldridge (10/3/1852-1879), the
oldest daughter of Gershom and Laura Baird. Mary is
the only Baird offspring appearing on the large memorial
(no. 8 below) who does not have an inscribed headstone
in the cemetery.]

and Eugene (Genie) Gersham Baird, 2/13/1860-2/12/1919.

the names of the Davis family: John M. 1841-1929 [no.
