mentioned in the Census he presumably died in the
late 19th century or early 20th century. His original
tombstone, a small, thin slab of whitish rock, was
inscribed with neither a birth nor death date.
Because the stone was broken into pieces, it was
replaced with a regular grave marker in 1990.]

Names and Dates on the Tombstones
in the
_Robert Field Wood Cemetery
The following names, dates, and other personal infor-
mation concerning the individuals buried in the Robert
Field Wood Cemetery between 1823 and 1896 follow in sequence
from no. 1 to no. 23 corresponding to the numerical sequence
of the tombstones diagrammed on the cemetery sketch on the
preceding page.
Certain entries include annotations within square
brackets [] to identify more clearly an interred individual
or to clarify his or her relationship to some other interred
party or to some figure outside the cemetery. The bracketed
annotations do not appear on the tombstones.
For the sake of brevity, the actual format of the birth
and death dates appearing on the tombstones is sometimes
abbreviated below so that an original date such as March 14,
1817, may be abbreviated as 3/14/1817. Inscriptions on
the grave markers that are unrelated to birth and dates or
are irrelevant to personal identification of the memori-
alized individual are generally omitted from this record.
1. Martha Yancey, 1778-1856. [This gravestone was
mistakenly installed in March 1990 because the inscrip-
tion on the ledger atop the rectangular sarcophagus for
Martha Yancey (no. 14 below) had eroded too much to
be completely deciphered until a later date. Thus the
same Martha Yancey has two memorial grave markers in
this cemetery.]

Wood (11/20/1852-11/4/1925), who was a son of Robert
Field and Mildred W. Wood, no. 6 below.]

(10/23/1778-2/?/1856), no. 14 below.]

[Wife of Joel Yancey (10/21/1773-4/?/1838), who was
a member of the State house of representatives (1809-
1811), the State senate (1816-1820, 1824-1827), and
a Democrat congressman (1827-1831). Martha was also
the mother of both Martha Yancey Wilson, no. 15 below,
and Lucy Yancey Wilson, no. 18 below, grandmother
of Charles R. Yancey, no. 13 above, and grandmother
of the Wilson's children, nos. 19-23 below. Martha
Yancey's brother-in-law, Jechonias Yancey (d. 1820),
was married to Mildred Wood, presumably an aunt of
Robert F. Wood, no. 6 above.]
15. Martha [R. Yancey] Wilson, 8/21/1800-9/?/1823, Wife

by Their Only Child W[illiam]. M[artin]. Willson [sic].
[James Willson (sic) was the husband of Martha Wilson,
no. 15 above. The phrase "Don[e] by Their Only Child"
suggests that the two sarcophagi, nos. 15 & 16, were
installed by W.M. Wilson. Yet because he was an
infant upon the death of his parents, he perhaps
had the sarcophagi installed years later -- unless

 4
his guardian, John B. Wilson, no. 17 below, had them
built in the name of his infant ward. John B_ wilson and
James Willson [sic] were brothers married to two Yancey
sisters. One of the brother's markers has an incorrect
birth date.
17. John B. Wilson, 1/21/1797-3/19/1878. [Husband of
Lucy Yancey, no. 18 below, and father of Lucy's
children, nos. 19-23 below.

no. 14 above, the sister of Martha Wilson, no. 15

Wilson was asuxiof John B. and Lucy Y. Wilson, nos.

on the lower part of the tombstone belong, presumably,
to the wife or a relative of W.W. Wilson.]

l Names and Dates on the Tombstones
_ in the
r Gershom Baird
&
John Milton Davis Cemetery
The following names, dates, and other personal infor-
mation concerning the individuals buried in the Baird and
Davis Cemetery in the 19th and 20th centuries follow in
sequence from no. 1 to no. 18 corresponding to the numerical
sequence of the tombstones diagrammed on the cemetery sketch
on the preceding page.
Certain entries include annotations within square
qbrackets [] to identify more clearly an interred individual
or to clarify his or her relationship to some other interred
party or to some figure outside the cemetery. The bracketed
annotations do not appear on the tombstones,.
For the sake of brevity, the format of the birth and
death dates appearing on the actual tombstones is sometimes
abbreviated below so that an original date such as November
15, 1862, may be abbreviated 11/15/1862.
The style and apparent vintage of the 14 inscribed
tombstones in this cemetery suggest that the first marker
bearing a name was not installed before the death of
GershOu1Baird (no. 6 below) in 1882. The next one, for
Loretta E. Baird Smith (no. 16 below), was apparently not
installed until her death in 1898. Thereafter, the 10
individuals who died between 1886 and 19hl seem to have had
no permanent headstones—unti1 after the death of Nell B.
Davis (no. 15 below) in 1941. That is, all 10 individual
headstones, the common memorial for both the Baird and
Davis families (no. 8 below), as well as the two headstones
for Eugene and Gershom Davis (nos. lh & 18 below), who died
after Nell Davis, seem to be of the same recent vintage,
and all are cut in the identical style and color of granite.
Presumably the four rocks (nos. 1,2,3 & 17) that bear

no inscription or marking are headstones for persons who
died before the headstone for Gershom Baird was installed
upon his death in 1882.
1. r[Uninscribed piece of shale, firmly secured in the
ground. It is similar to the pieces of unmarked shale
in nos. 2 and 3 below. Possibly the three markers
together are for William Baird (2/24/1760-10/30/1855)
and his wife, Jane Hunt (11/5/1769-9/3/1856), i.e., the
parents of Gershom Baird (no. 6 below), and for
Mary Elizabeth Baird Aldridge (10/3/1852-1879), the
oldest daughter of Gershom and Laura Baird. Mary is
the only Baird offspring appearing on the large memorial
(no. 8 below) who does not have an inscribed headstone
in the cemetery.]

another daughter, Loretta E. Baird, 1862-1898, isrnot
listed on the memorial, she is buried in this cemetery
(no. 16 below). Neither are two sons listed, i.e.,
William (Billy) Keith Baird, 6/19/1857-1935 (or 19367)

10. Willie D. [William S. Davis, 1887-1887 (sic), son of
John M. and Allie B. Davis, nos. 7 & 9 above.]
11. Bettie D. [Presumably Mary Elizabeth Davis, 1882-1885,
daughter of John M. and Allie B. Davis, nos. 7 & 9
above.]
12. Kate B. [Kate Gillum Baird, 1868-1890, daughter of
Gershom and Laura Baird, nos. 5 & 6 above.]
13. Anna B. [Anna Blanche Baird, 10/31/1865-8/11/1913,
daughter of Gershom and Laura Baird, nos. 5 & 6 above.]
