_ Senate Library Committee Recommends Automated Circulation System
Louis J. Swift, Chairman, Senate Library Committee, in his Annual
I Report on Senate Library Committee urges that the University
I Library convert to an automated circulation system during the
i coming academic year, l978—79. The Committee concludes "that the
I manual system currently in use has broken down. Not only does it
. _make for delays in checking out books, but it also contributes
immeasurably to the problems of conducting inventories, recalling
needed items, assessing fines, handling the reserve room and, in
general, managing the whole circulation process with accuracy,
efficiency, and economy. University libraries across the country
are alleviating such problems with automated systems, and it is
clear that no library of any size will be financially capable of
serving future needs of users without some form of automation.
The benefits of the new system will help the Library in a great
many areas of operation and will affect the Medical Center Library
and the Community Colleges as well as academic units on the main
campus. For this reason, the Committee feels that a changeover
‘ should occur very soon and that every effort should be made to
dovetail this process with the new classification project now
underway."
