Freshmen climb
in Add/Drop ranks
as semester begins

By MYRNA MARCA
Staff Writer

Being number two isn’t often a
position that is relished, but this
year freshmen will welcome the op-
portunity.

Add/Drop, which traditionally
kicks off the start of each semester,
starts tomorrow and runs through
Aug. 28.

While Add/Drop is nothing new
to older students, freshmen will
stand second in line to add or drop
courses for the Fall 1990 session —
a break from the past.

“Since (freshmen) are at the end
of the file at Advance Registration,
we’re trying to let them have a
chance to pick up what they need
during Add/Drop,” said Lisa Col-
lins, director of registration.

Graduate students and seniors
will Add/Drop first, followed by
freshmen, juniors, sophomores, and
non-degree students.

“Everybody who‘s involved in
registration at UK felt like it was
time that the freshmen were given
an opportunity to get at the head of
the line, so to speak," Collins said.

Add/Drop will also feature chang-
es in registration sites. This proce-
dure will decentralize graduate
school Add/Drop throughout the
campus, Collins said.

“If this goes well, we will contin-
ue with this scheme of graduate stu—
dents and seniors first and then
freshmen in the next Add/Drop.”

In the past, there have been com-
plications with computer system
crashes, but Collins does not fore-
see any problems this time. During
Advance Registration and Summer
Advising Conferences, there was no
down time.

“We‘re going to try as hard as we
can to keep the lines going, to keep
the people going into the sites, get-
ting what they need, and getting out
of the sites,” Collins said.

Here are some hints to make Add/
Drop easier:

-Although students can Add/Drop
after their appointment, showing up
at the correct time and at the correct
site makes the process easier.

~Have the Add/Drop sheet com-
pleted with correct course and sec—
tion numbers.

-Prepare alternatives in case you
can not get into a class.

'Pay any outstanding parking
tickets, library fines, or tuition fees.
Students will not be allowed to
Add/Drop if there is a “stop" on
their account.

Four candidates remain in search for next UK president

By GREGORY A. HALL
Senior Staff Writer

Only four fi-
nalists remain as
the search com-
mittee charged
with recom-
mending UK‘s
next president
meets again to-
morrow after-
noon, seeking a
replacement for
former head Da- OCKERMAN
vid Roselle.

Gathering for a seventh time, the
10-member committee will meet af-
ter the regular Board of Trustees
meeting on campus. The finalists
will visit UK during the first two
weeks of September, when BOT
members hope to name a successor.

The finalists‘ visits include mect~
ing with trustees. students, faculty,
the administration and representa-
tives from Lexington Community
College. Each visit is expected to
last a little more than a day.

Search Committee Chairman Fos-

ter Ockcrman said the committee
plans to present the finalists to the
board at the Sept. l8 meeting.

Ockcrman, who also chairs the
BOT. said the committee will not
rank the finalists, since the commu-
tee‘s purpose is to conduct the
search, not nominate the president.

None of the finalists” names will
be released until the campus visits,
but the four are “very well qualified
individuals," ()ckerinan said. Confr
dentiality is provided to keep the fi»
nalists in the race.

The finalists are all “presidents of
universities or branches of universi-
ties," he said, but that doesn‘t in«
cludc community college officials.

Many say interim president
Charles Wethington, who was com-
munity college chancellor before be-
ing named to the interim post, is the
front-runner for the job, although
Wcthington has declined to discuss
the presidential search.

Earlier in the search, ()ckerman
released the status of Wcthington‘s
candidacy, since Wethington stated
his candidacy was public record.

Wcthington was among the l4
candidates still in consideration for

The UK Board of Trustees is
expected to repeal a controversial
fee aimed at international stu-
dents when it meets tomorrow in
its regular session.

The International Student Envi-
ronment Committee, which is
made up of students and faculty,
examined the structure of the in-
ternational student fee and rec-
ommend that the BOT rescind it,
according to Studartflovcmmcm
Association President Sean Loh-
man.

Currently, more than 900 inter—

national UK students must annual-
ly pay a $125 fee for activities and
services that specifically benefit
them.

However, last spring many peo
ple criticized the extra levy -~
which the BOT approved in May
I988 M because intemational stu~
dents already pay a tuition com—
parable to what out-oilstatc stu-
dents pay, Lohinan said.

The lSE committee was formed
this March to look at several is-
sues conceming international stu-
dents, including the fee, which
went into effect last fall.

The purpose of the fee was “a
legitimate question to propose,“

The international students wer-
en‘t told about the fee until they
were notified by the University to
pay the bill, Lohman said.

“The international students
brought it to my attention, and
there was a lot of hostility in-
volved," Lohman said. “The main
problem with the fee is that it
didn't go through the students.“

man. could not be reached for
