My dear Sir

I am very grieved to hear of your loss.
When you introduced your son to me

his bright intelligent look struck me
and I should have been pleased to number
him among my students and give him any
help in my power.

Twenty years ago I lost the only son I
then possessed 8: though he was but a child
the blow was hard to bear and the memory
of it makes my sympathy with your sorry
very genuine.

Patience & hard work pulled me through the
evil days of that time 3 and though I do not
think that a man’s life ever seems the same
after one of these knockdown blows - he
may be none the worse fitted to live in
this no wise playfull world and do a man's
work there.

I trust that your experience may be no worse
than mine
