Instead of directing you to the maison Pleyel for the informa-
tion that you desire, perhaps I would have done better to direct you
to M. Shlebinguer, who, as you told me, proposed to you to look over
the collection of French songs, and whom I believe also is quite a-
ble to manage your small undertaking..

Do not look upon this advice as a favor, except that it enables you
to avoid two Sundays, always very boring and fatiguing in a city like
‘Paris.

Accept, Sir, and kindly share with M. Guillet, all my thanks for the
small pilgrimage that you have been kind enough to make in my behalf,
and the expression of my distinguished consideration.

Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760—1856) French song writer. was
one of those authors whom a single work made famous. The song which
has immortalized him, the marseillaise, was composed at Strassburg.
where Rouget de Lisle was quartered in April, 1792. He wrote both
words and music in a fit of patriotic excitement after a puhlic din»
ner. The piece was at first called Chant de guerre de l'armee du Rhin
and only received its name of Marseillaise from its adoption by the
ProVen al volunteers, who were prominent in the storming of the Tui—
leries. The author was a moderate republican, and was cashiered and
thrown into prison; but the counter—revolution set him at liberty.

In 1825 he publishgd ghagt§_fipgn¥gi§, in which he set to music fifty
