I understand however that owing to some temporary cause the quarry at Sp--- is not at present working and you will forgive my natural anxiety to know when it is again likely to go on and to express my hope that if it all convenient it may be in time to answer the use of my demand which is a pretty large one. I would not have given you this trouble were it not that I should sustain considerable inconvenience from any chance that should prevent my getting my building roofed in by the end of the season. I remain Sir Your obedient Servant Walter Scott Edinburgh 6 June 1822 [addressed to Mr. Innes, ????, Near Kelso; docketed 6 June 1822, red wax seal] Sir I was honoured with your letter accompanying a volume of poems which I found lying for me upon my return to town three days ago, a circumstance which I notice as occasioning my apparent delay in returning my thanks for the favour. I am afraid there is some mistake in your supposing me a member of the Society you mention at least I do not at present recollect that I have that honour and concur that you have been misled by some similarity of name. But I am not the less obliged to the chance which has given me an opportunity returning thanks to you for the pleasure with which I have perused your volume of poetry and of expressing my high opinion of the author’s talents. I have the honour to be Sir Your most obedient Servant Walter Scott Edinburgh 14 November
