I may say that I am willing to undertake Boccaccio for the "Cheat Writers“ under a certain condition Wh. I will explain. The manuscript which I told you I had written on Boccaccio about a year ago, was intended to serve as Introduction to a new translation of the Becameron. Vizetelly was the publisher, who requested me to do it. The translation has not been heard of by me since last Feb. 7 & I have seen nothing of it. I wrote to Vizetelly about five weeks ago, begging to be informed whether he still meant to go on with the book. No answer has reached me to this letter. I have today written again to say that I consider our agreement at an end. I myself at liberty to make what use I like of my Ms. I must await his answer before I definitely engage myself to you. I should greatly prefer to publish what I have to say about Boccaccio in your series than as an Introduction to a translation wh. may not prove to my taste. I shall have to reqrite the whole & add a good deal of matter. But this, as I know by experience, will improve my work. Your Victor Hugo has not come to hand yet. Very truly yours J 0A.. smonés SYMONDS, John Addington (18h0-1893) Author and critic. DaVas Platz. A.L.S. to Theodore Marzials (b.1850). 27 Jan. 1889. hp. (doable sheet, octave) With embossed address of: Am.Hof, DaVaS Platz, Switzerland. He explains that the introduction be wrote for Vizetelly) for a news translation of the Decemeron, has not bee called for. If that work does not proceed, he will be glad to rework his essay into a life of Boccaccio for the "Great writers" series. (Symonds Life Of Boccaccio appeared in 1895.) .
