Arlington, Henry Bennet, earl of, mem-
ber of tho ‘C‘abalfl was born in 1618. He
studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and gra-
duatcd MA. ; served as a volunteer in the
royalist army during the civil war: and con-
tinued in the service of Charles 11. during the
Ctnnmomrealth. He was made secretary to the
(l11l(("()f York, knighted by Charles at Bruges
in 1658, and in October 1662 was appointed
principal Secretary of state. In March 1664 he
was made a baron, by tho title of Lord Arling-
ton. It 'as in 1667 that he be‘mne a mem~
ber of tho famous council known as the ‘ Cabal,’
and in 1672 he was crmted Viscount Thotford
and Earl of Arlington, and made K.C‘r. After
bring:r cmployml in foreign negotiations he was,
early in 1671, impeached by the House of
Commons as a promoter of poliery, and a ;
traitor in his office of secretary of state. ‘
Tl‘hough vanittc-d he. rcsignml his post, and *as
named chambcrlain to the king. He soon lost;
favour with the king, and was made the. subject
of jest: and mimicry among the courticrs, but;
was novertlmlcss chosen, inWlGTD, a member of
the council. and was continued in his office of
chainberlain by James 11. Arlington was at
heart a Romanist. and died in communion with
the Catholic Church; yet he dissuaded the
king on grounds of policy from showing favour
to the Catholics. He married Isabella, daughter
0 f Louis ofXassau, by whom he left on c daughter.
