BARKER, Emu‘xu H .\‘n\', an indefatigable
Classical scholar, was born December 1788, at
Hollym Vicarage, Yorkshire, ofwhieh his fatherw as

sided for some time with Dr. Parr, and afterwards

16 March, 1839. Mr. Barker w s a most laborious
compiler, but his judgment was far from hei‘rt,r
equal to his industry. l’orson once said to him,
‘ Sir, you have read a great deal, you have thought
very little, and you know nothing} His works are
too numerous to allow of their titles beingr given
in this place. Sullice it to ' that he published
some good editions of clas cal authors, and con-
tribnted some sound pieces of criticism to the
‘Classical Journal,’ the ‘ Retrospective Review,’
and the ‘ British Critic.’ He also had a considera-
ble part in preparing' Valpy’s edition ot‘ Stephen’s
"l‘hesaurus Grzeca: Liugnze.’ Among his mis-
cellaneous publications, are two volumes of
anecdotes about Dr. Parr, and a similar collection
res )ectintY Professor l’orson.
