the half-title of vol. I: “C. C. Felton From his friend Charles Dickens, Nineteenth
October 1842”. Dr. Cornelius C. Felton was an American classical scholar of consider—
able renown. He was Professor of Creek at Harvard College for many years and later
became President of the College. Dickens met Felton in 1842 at Cambridge and the
two men were friendly until Feltou’s death in 1862. In the earlier year (1842) Dickens
traveled with Felton from New Haven to New York, where he was scheduled to attend
a dinner in his honor arranged 11y W'ashington Irving. 011 the boat, Dickens and Felton
appear to have indulged in a prodigious. drinking bout, which was described amusingly
in a letter by Dickens. With the L. C. Felton bookplate.

Dear Sir,

he have just acquired and would like to report to you before
cataloguing two letters of ROBERT SOUTHEY :

(1) ALS, 1%pp. etc. Keswick, 25rd October 1852 to Mrs. Bree,
Suffolk, franked by John Hickman, firfriend of Lamb and
Southey "I wish applications like yours were as uncommon as
you have supposed them to be, and that it were in my power
to reply to them in a manner less painful to myself and more
satisfactory to otherse It is not in my power either to do
what you wish, or to get it done. Circumstances which it is
not necessary to explain made it necessary for me, as soon
as the Quarterly Review obtained a high reputation, to form
a resolution of never criticising a contemporary poetry.
Notiing but such a resolution could have saved me from the
certain danger of offending many of my acquaintances, and
some of my friends - I have no control whatever over that
Review; ... but indeed what any Review can do for a volume
of poems is at this time verr little indeedo Except that
under very peculiar circumstances, there is no general sale
for poetry; every poet feels this to his cost; every
bookseller knows, and every publisher acts upon ite For any
sale beyond the immediate circle of the author's friends, a
book must be indebted to the exertions of thdse who will
interest themselves in recommending it" etc.

with fine impression of wax seal a £5. 5. O.

(2) AL in third person, %p. etc. heswick, 15th August 1852 to the
same thanking her for Mr; BreeTs poeis‘"the pleasing
memorial of a very arrziahle and accomplished man" he
heartily wishes that in the unfavoirahle time for poet
