I hOpe that brave peeple will escape the fate which all other nations have recently experienced. I am afraid that they have little to expect but from themselves. the Christian zeal of the holy alliance seems to stOp where the interests of power are threatehed, a a treaty with the Turks a- gainst the Greeks may perhaps bear the same date & the same names as an ordonance for the reestablishment of inquisition. I am very thankful for your kind offer concerning my books. But my booksellers seem to think the privilege of having the sheets sent before the publication will be of some profit to them, & I could not deprive them of it unlesSI could indemnify them. I be- lieve they ask 50 L besides I am afraid it is rather late as the book will come out about the 14th of January. I have been induced to publish a larger part of my work at once, which has occasioned the delay. the two first partswill appear at once. This book has procured me the advantage at least of forget- ting sometimes entirely all political affairs. What I shall always remember with gratitude & affection will be the friendship you are so kind as to assure me of. ‘ Believe me my dear Sir Xbre 18th 1823 yours sincerely Monsieur (Edward) Blaquiere . B Constant Southampton Edward Blaquiere the recipient of this letter was in England at this time to consult with the Greek Committee, and to raise a loan to support the movement for Greek independence. He was a partisan of the Mavrocordato faction in Greece. On his way back to Greece he stepped at Genoa to see Byron, and it was he who sent to Byron to come to Greece. (Collection of Captain F; L.
