     Minutes of the regular quarterly meeting of the Board of
Trustees of the University of Kentucky for Tuesday, December 20,
1927.

     The Board of Trustees of the University of Kentucky met
in regular quarterly session in the President's office of the
University of Kentucky on Tuesday, December 20, 1927, at 11:30
a.. m.  The following meiabers were present:  Governor Flem D.
Sampson, Judge R. C. Stoll, Senator Richard P. Ernst, Superin-
tendent McHenry Rhoads, Lir. Frank McKee, Mr. Robert G. Gordon,
Mr. E. B. Webb, Mr. W. J. Webb and rT, Louis HillenmeyeT,
Meeting with the Board ware President Frank L. McVey and Well-
ington Patrick, Secretary of the Board,

     The minutes of the Septerfber meeting of the Board were
read and approved.

Agent was read and on motion, duly seconded, ordered received

     3. Report of the President.  President IecVey made a report
to the Board covering the needs of the University and its proposals
for appropriations at the next legislature.   The report was ordered
printed and nresented to the Legislature as the biennial report of
the Board of Trustees to the Governor and the Legisla.ture.

     6 Gift of the Jockey Club.   President McVey reported to the
Board that the Jockey Club had offered the University a gift of
$5O0Q to--he uscd by tho Experiment Station for experimental work.
Motion was made, seconded and carried that the gift be accepted
and the President of the University be authorized to accept the
gflift and acknowledge it.

     7. Bureau of Business Research.  A communication was read
frown Dean.Wiest asking for the establishment of a Bureau of Business
Research in the College of Commerce.  The matter was discussed
at length and the following resolution was passed:

     RESOLVED, That it is the sense of the Board of Trustees of
the University of Kentucky that a Bureau of Business Research be
authorized beginning with the next scholastic year, the Board
of Trustees to approve the general lines of investigation.

     The President was requested to communicate to the Board of
Trustees at its next meeting in April 'the details for the operation
of the Bureau and the lines of the work proposed.

     8. Purchase of Kitchen ElquiLpment for New Cafeteria.  President
McVey called attention of the members of the BGja.rd Co the fact
that it wouild be necessary to secure bids in  ancfor the pur-
chase of kitchen equipment for the new c~afctoeri:u noN being provided
for in the new recitation building.  Motion was madoe, secondlod
and carried that the President be authorized. to call for bids for
such equipment.

     9. Alumni Election.   As provided by the statutes and the
regulations of the Board of Trustees the ballots for the alumni
election were opened and tabulated. The following persons from
the alumni of the University wer.e present and assisted. in the
tabulation: Mr. Raymond L. Kirk, alumni secretary; Professor W. E.
Freeman, Miss Idie Lee Turner, and Miss Curtis Buehler.   The tab-
ulation showed that the six candidates received votes as follows:

     Motion was made, seaonded and carried that in accordance with
the statutes and the regu].L;tions of the Board, the Secretary be
directed to certify to th3 Governor of the State the names of
Thompson R. Bryant, Jaie,-, Park and W. C. Wilson, the Governor to
select one from the lists


     10. Election of Senator Ernst to the Executive Committee,  It
was called to the attention of the Board that Mr. Rhoads, a member
of the Executive Committee, retires from office January 1, 1928,
and the Board proceeded to elect a successor to Mr. Rhoads on the
Executive Committee.   Senator Ernst was nominated, and unanimously
elected.


     11. Delegate to the University of Porto Rico.   An invitation
from the University of Porto Rico asking the University of Kentucky
to appoint a delegate to the celebration of its twenty-fifth anni-
versary to be held March 10-14, 1928 was read.    A motion was
made, seconded and carried that the president be authorized to
select a delegate.


     12. Lease of Van Meter Farm.  A corrected lease for the Van
Meter farm was presented to the Board and motion was made, seconded
and carried that the Chairman of the Board be authorized to execute
it.


     13. The J. B. Sax Memorial Fund.   President McVev stated to
thie Board that Professor Car ol Sax had proposed to the University
of Kentucky that he establish a memorial fund in memory of his
father.   The President had indicated that the University attorney
had drawn a form for the trust and that the matter would be taken
up with Professor Sax,   A motion was glade, seconded and carried
that the Executive Commrittee be authorized to act in the matter
at such time as the details are determined.

     14. President's Request for Permission to Accept Invitation
of University of Chicago. President 1M1cVey indicated that he had
been invited by the University of Chicago to give a course in the
summer session on College and University Administration, and asked
Dermission from the Board to absent himself for such time during
the summer as may be necessary to accept the invitation.   Motion
was made, authorizing the President to accept the invitation.


     15. A)pointments. Resignations and Leaves of Absence.   The
following list of appoint-rcents, resignations and leaves of absence
was presented by Presd.~_:t McVey and on motion, duly seconded,
aporoved as recommended;

     Dr. J. E. Rush, requested permission to withdraw his leave
of absence during the second semester of 1327-1928.   His request
was granted.

     Professor T. T. Jcnos was granted sabbatical leave of absence
on half pay for the firs- semester, 1928-1929.

     Mr. E. e. Johnson, Assistant in the Department of Markets,
was granted sabbatical leave on one-half pay during the second
semester, 1927-1028,

     Increase in salary of Miss Gertrude Wade, Assistant Professor
in Home Economics, from V000 to $2300 a year.

     Increase in salary of Mrs. Katherine Bascomr clerk in the
Department of Agronomy, from $1200 to $1260 a year.

     Increase in salary of Dr. F. E. Hull, assistant veterinarian,
from $2300 to $2600 a year.

     Increase in salary of Dr. P. R. Edwards., assistant bacteriol-
ogist, Department of Veterinary Science, fromMO to $2500 a year.

     Increase in salary of Mrs. Meier in the Bureau of School
Service from $85 to $100 a month, effective January 1, 1928.

     Correction of minutes of Executive Committee for November

was given a salary of  ill6-2/3 a month.  This should read
$136-2/3 a month.
