KENTUCKY'S COLORS _
The blue and white of the University of Kentucky are known to
sports fans everywhere. Oilicially the colors are Yale blue and white,
but in the beginning, when the Lexington institution was still known
as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, the colors
were "Stoll blue" and white. One day back in the l890’s a group of
Kentucky football stalwarts met to choose their school colors. Someone
suggested blue and white—"blue like Dick Stoll’s necktie"—and those
colors were immediately adopted. "Dick" Stoll was to become judge
Richard C, Stoll, distinguished public servant and, for more than fifty
years before his death, a member of the U.K. board of trustees.

 BLANTON COLLIER
Head Football Coach
(Three Years —— Won 'I9, Lost l0, Tied ll
, A quiet-mannered native Kentuckian, who fulfilled a 1ife—long am-
bition wl1en he took over the coaching reins at his home-state univer-
sity in 1954, Blanton Collier is a man with a unique background and
a potentially great future.
\Vith only three years in the collegiate coaching ranks behind him,
the popular \Vildcat mentor is highly regarded in athletic circles the
country over and already has earned the distinction of "Coach of the
Year" in the tough Southeastern Conference, where a vote is harder
to get than campaign promises in july.
T In gaining this honor in his freshman season at Kentucky, an
achievement made all the more significant considering it was the first
time the title had been bestowed on a coach in his initial year of college
tutoring, Collier climaxed a unique rise in the game.
Although his first three VVildcat elevens have not reached the
Southeastern Conference throne room or taken part in post-season bowl
activities, both University officials and the "Man In The Street" are
satisfied with Collier’s accomplishments and willing to give him at
least two more years. The two seasons aren’t any deadline, but repre-
sent the remainder of the five-year period that the coach estimated in
1954 would be necessary to build a team of personallyselected players
and develop them into a serious contender.
Record Shows Two Triumphs Over Vols
Progress toward this goal has been remarkable. The V\’ildcats in
three seasons under Collier have posted 19 wins and one tie in 30
starts, including two triumphs out of three meetings with arch-rival
Tennessee. Even greater results are anticipated in the next two years.
Only four men on the 1957 team are holdovers from the pre—Collier
g era and last season’s undefeated freshman squad was called one of the
best in years.
Coincidental with his success on the football field, Coach Collier
has gained increasingly wide popularity and respect throughout the
state and nation. Relations with Kentucky high school coaches are at
an all-time high and the VVildcat mentor is constantly in demand as
