Our Guest Columnist will be contributing reviews from time to time, and
we will consider for publication book notices submitted by the library staff. We
will be looking forward to finding out what librarians really read.
This week, the Best Seller Candidate is our new reference addition to the
library, Social Science Citation Index (by the Same People Who Brought You.. .
Science Citation Index). This index is not used as a subject approach reference
tool; instead the user begins with a reference [e.g. Ranganathan 57 Prolegema
Library] which will then lead the user to sources that have cited the referenced
article [e.g., jones K.P. JAM SC Inf. 24 157 73]. The rationale behind citation
indexing is the speed of citation indexing over subject analysis which, of course, —
means the information is available to the user long before that in a subject ana-
lysis index. We urge librarians and patrons to examine and make use of this val- ‘
uable reference tool. lf not a Best Seller, then, at least, a Best User Tool in the
Library. mm

 DlRECTOR'S NOTE:
I have been asked to supply a note for the staff bulletin. I would like to
briefly outline the reorganization plans proposed to go into effect by the be-
ginning of the upcoming fiscal year. An abbreviated organization chart follows:

This structure is patterned after the revised system at Columbia University.
Additional reorganization may be necessary when SOLINET implementation begins.
I hope that this new structure will be the first phase of a program designed to
provide expanded library and information services for the University. The ad-
ministrative vacancies have been discussed by the department heads and are ten-
tatively filled, except for heads of the Services and Resources Divisions. Both
of these are scheduled to remain vacant for the present time, but I would be
pleased to learn of any staff members interested in either position. Further
information on the director's office staff will be forthcoming soon. d
The known and anticipated professional vacancies to be filled for the
coming fiscal year include positions in:
l. Reference
2. Cataloging
3. Acquisitions
4. Biological Sciences (fall 1974)
If some of the positions are filled from within the University library system then,
of course other vacancies will occur and they will be announced.
If you have an interest in any of the positions noted above please make an
appointment with me as soon as possible to discuss your interest. Positions
not filled from within the library system will be advertised and recruitment
done on a national basis. Please feel free to see me concerning the reorgan-
ization proposal or any other matter relating to presonnel recruitment or
selection. _

(UPI)--A mild-mannered librarian at Michigan State University has launched
what could be called the "Librarian Liberation Movement". David
Taylor said he and many of his colleagues are angry over the seeming
whimsy publishers use in changing the names of their publications.
The group Taylor formed is called LUTFCSUSTC. That stands for
Librarians United to Fight Costly, Silly, Unnecessary Serial Title
Changes.
BRANCH LIBRARIES -- Agriculture Library: Toni Powell has been acting in the
capacity of a teaching—librarian for the College of Agriculture. At the
request of some of the faculty, she has been guest lecturer in several
classes. The topic discussed is use of the library in general and
specific indexes requested by the faculty member. Two lectures have
been given so far and three more are planned.
