 BALTIMORE, FEBRUARY 27m, 1831.

'To the Committee appointed by the General Conference of 1834,—
to compile a new Hymn 1300ka the Methodist Protestant
Church.

‘DEAR BRETHREN:

Last autumn, in order to obviate some causes of delay which

previously existed, the Committee entrusted entirely to me the
compilation of the Hymn Book. To this duty was added the

superintendence of the press. I now have the pleasure of re-
porting the completion of. the work.

The volume consists of six hundred and forty-eight pages.
As it respects the character of its contents:-—the importance,
variety and arrangement of its subjects; the manner in which
they are treated; and the adaptation of the collection to the
purposes of public, social, family and private devotion;—-the
Committee and the Church will form and express their own
judgment. Let it suffice for me to remark here, that I have
never labored more arduousiyin the fulfilment of any engage-
ment, than I have done-while employed in the accomplishment
of this.

H umbly praying that the Head of the Church may honor the

use of the book with his blessing,

1 remain,
Your brother in the Lord,

THOMAS H. STOCKTON.

Tue Committee appointed by the General Conference to
repare and publish a new Hymn Book for the Methodist
'rotestmrt Church, take occasion, on the presentation of this
ost valuable collection of Hymns, to tender their acknowl-
dgements to the compiler for his untirlng exertions in the
rosecution of his task to its completion; and commend the
,‘o’rk to the attention and use of all the churches, as a body of
ymns embracing every subject within the entire compass of
it‘inity, systomaticaliy and perspicuously arranged. and admi-
-hly adapted to public, social, family, and private worship,

V It is presumed, that a more comprehensive and spiritual
ollection of Hymns, better calculated to instruct the under-
' ending in the truths of religion, to improve the heart in pious
intiment, and elevate the afi‘ections, has never yet appeared
: the English language. And we sincerely hr lieve, that under
are sanctifying and saving influences of the Holy Spirit, the
gin use of this book will promote and increase the knowledge
1:! piety of all who employ it in the worship of Almighty God,
rough the mediation of the divine Redeemer.

R'ippon, 207

How precious is the book divine,
How shall I walk my God to please,
, How sweet, how heavenly is the sight,

How sweetly flowed the gospel, See.

How tedious and tasteless the hours,

How vain are all things here below,
AND my house will serve the Lord, C. I'Ves.
I ask the gift of righteousness,

i know that my Redeemer lives,

I left the God of truth and light,

I’ll praise my Maker while l‘ve, &e.

I long to behold him arrayed,

I love the volume of thy word,

I love thy kingdom, Lord,

I own my guilt, my sins confess, .

I sing the Almighty power of God,

I thirst, thou wounded Lamb of God, W23, Col.

I want a heart to pray, .

I want a principle within,

1 want the Spirit of power within,

If death my friend and me divide,

If human kindness meets return,

In a land of strange delight,

In age and feebleness extreme,

In boundless mercy, gracious Lord,

In duties and in sufferings too,

In fellowship alone,

In God’s own house pronounce his, 6&0.

In sleep‘s serene oblivion laid,

In this world of sin and sorrow,

In thy great name, 0 Lord, we come,

In thy name, 0 Lord, assembling,

In vain opposing nations rage,

In vain we seek for peace with God, Pratt’s Col.

Indulgent Father, by whose care,

Indulgent Father l how divine,

Indulgent Lord, thy geod’hess reigns,

Infinite excellence is thine” .

Infinite God, to thee we raise,
