From the Rabbi's Desk

In the life of ( congregation,
a rabbi has many functions. He
has to teach, counsel, conduct wor—
ship services, provide ideas for
programs and countless other ac—
tivities which fill out the hours
with challenging and varied activi—
ty.

However, no congregation can
function only with a rabbi. There
have to be congregants who parti—
cipate also — who attend the class
sessions, who have problems and
need advice, who attend worship,
who carry out ideas and projects
for the congregation. It is cer—
tainly not a one man operation by
any means.

As your rabbi, I am very much
aware of this need for congregants
who fulfill these obligations, who
serve our congregation in countless
little ways. The dedication and
devotion of such people often goes
unnoticed and without recognition.
We take their participation for
granted and fail to appreciate how
they contribute in unsung ways.

As a congregation, we feel that
this oversight should not occur
and so five years ago began a
yearly ceremony of honoring members
who have given of themselves to the
congregation, in ways in which all
of us benefit.

Our annual ceremony is this Fri-
day evening during-services. It is
an occasion for thanks and for ex—
pressing our gratitude to a member
who has been a source of strength
to us all. Come to services and
join in this worthwhile occasion.
The honoree is much deserving.

William J. Leffler
Rabbi

AW‘H .

For the first time in one whole
month we had a meeting. It was won—
derful to be back! (??) Well, any—
way we had an inspiring Speaker,
programmed by our hardworking,
industrious, diligent program com—
mittee. Even though the speaker
was a school teacher, nobody got
sick (except maybe from leftover
spaghetti). Mr. Switzer even gave
us some information with which to
blackmail Jack and it is all written
down. This information is for sale
at a very reasonable price to any
TYGer. (Say, 25%)

We have new carpet! VeahII The
only thing we request is your help
in keeping it new. Please be care—
ful of cigarette ashes, paint, glue,
or other damaging substances on the
carpet. We hope to add more furni-
ture soon, and hopefully by the
time of the Hagigah, we'll have the
room re—done. Neat, huh?

January is birthday month.
There are at least three people with
birthdays, probably more. So, happy
birthday to you all, and just wait
until you get to go through the
spanking machine!

Just wait until you see what's
coming up next week. Tune in same
time, same place next Saturday.

Shalom

From the Rabhi's Desk

Thir past week I attended a rab—

binic meeting
which we diFC
uation on the campus and what our
Jewish youth are into. Some of it

wn a major campus at

was most heartening to hear. Jewish

studies programs are beginning to
grow and flourish. Jewish students
are interested in studying Jewish
sources and finding out more about
the roots and the teachings of
Judaism. It was most heartening to

hear these aspects of campus activi—

ties.

On the other hand, some of the
other discussion I heard was less
heartening, though not really sur—
prising. It dealt with the leap
frogging of involvement which so
many students exhibit — two months
of intensive interest in this acti—
vity and three months in that and
so on. Into each of these activi—
ties the students threw themselves,
searching for "identity" and
Hmeaning", which is really a part
of the maturing, experimental as—
pects of growing up, I suspect.
However; what distressed me the
most was the adult pandering to
this form of behavior as if it were
the essence of maturity and not
something less than mature.

Perhaps the basic problems are
the needs for prospective and for a
sense of humor. For an adult two
or even six months of interest in
an activity is not very long. For
a young person it may seem like
ages. And we also need to be able
to laugh — both at our adult con—
cerns and hang ups — as well as the
concerns of young people. There is
so much non—sense in our world to-
day that we let pass as sense. It
really gets us confused.

Nonetheless, it was a worthwhile
meeting.

The next TYG meeting is Sunday,
February A at 1:30 in the Temple
Vestry. Mrs. Ireland, head of the
volunteers at UK Medical Center,
is our planned speaker. Her topic
is not known.

Our banner is coming along well.
It is gold on green with black

pieces for it had been cut out, but
not yet sewn together.

It is a well known fact (7) that
the youth group lounge is carpeted.
Furniture is now the topic for dis—
cussion. Nothing has been ordered,
we're still waiting for Jack's
seal of approval.

FLASH! Some late New Year reso—
lutions — our youth group newspaper
"Announcements, Announcements,
Announcements" is to be re—evalua-

won't you Jack?
