From the Rabbi’s Desk

Last month we devoted a Sabbath
evening to a consideration of the
Union Camp Institute and three out—
standing TYG'ers from Nashville
were here and told us the story of
Union Camp Institute in song, poetry
and movie. The following evening
Rabbi Paul Menitoff was also here
and spoke to the Temple Board on
the subject, spelling out the fi—
nancial ills of the camp, that it
is about $75,000 in the red.

This camp is supported by the
congregations in the general Ohio
Valley—Midwest area of our country
and is used by our children during
the summer - but not in sufficient
numbers. There were empty spaces,
and as a result an operating
deficit. If this continues, the
camp will have to be closed.

In Rabbi Menitoff's talk to the
Board he pointed out that just one
more camper from each of the con—
gregations in our area would take
the camp out of the red and make it
pay for itself. Last summer we
sent two campers (not counting
TYG'ers to OVFTY). This year if
we can send one more camper — and
every other congregation does like—
wise — the camp will be filled.

So if your child is thinking of
going to camp, consider Union Camp
Institute. It has many advantages
and deserves our support. And if
you would like to help lower the
indebtedness of the camp, checks
will also be accepted for that
purpose.

The enclosed brochure with
application will give you more
specifics about the camp.

ADULTEDUCAHON
THE QUALITY OF OUR FAMILY LIFE

This year the Adult Education Committee will focus on family life.
All families face conflict, day—to—day problems in relating to one
another, failures in communication among its members. Our purpose is
to offer members of the congregation the opportunity to increase the
quality of their family life, to heighten understanding and communica-
tion between family members. All of us want to lead as happy a family
life as possible. We hope this series will help in the achievement of
that goal.

A series of five films, secured from the State Department of Human
Resources, Educational Branch, will be shown on January 12, 19 and 26
and February 2 and 9 (9:h5 — 11 ME A.M.) at the Lexington Oral School,
158 North Ashland Avenue, which is just down the street from the
Temple. A discussion, question and answer period — a "thinking to—
gether sessionH will follow the film. A psychiatrist or psyChologist
will lead each discussion.

January 12 — Love2 Susan — This film deals with parent—child misunder—
standing. Its purpose is to help family members recognize and cope
with parental misunderstanding and mistreatment, and to help them un—
derstand how both parents and children can unintentionally cause con—
flicts within even a loving family. Discussion leader — Dr. Leonard
Lipton.

January 19 — But Names Will Never Hurt? This film deals with the
nature of prejudice; how prejudice separates one person from another
and affects the feelings of everyone concerned. Its purpose is to help
people recognize situations where prejudice and discrimination exist
and to help them express and deal with the feelings aroused by preju-
dice. Discussion leader — Dr. Aaron Mason.

January 26 — Breakup — This film deals with the impact of divorce
upon parents and children: the fear, anger, guilt and anxiety which
this situation arouses in family members. Its purpose is to help
people deal with family breakup in a sensitive, effective manner.
Discussion leader — Dr. Nat Sandler

February 2 — In My Memogy - This film deals with the death of a loved
one. Its purpose is to explore the meaning of death and to help people

develop ways of dealing with the feelings brought about by the death
of a family member or a friend. Discussion leader — To be announced.

February 9 — pr and Big — This film deals with the impact of T.V. ad—
vertisement on our lives. Its purpose is to help parents guide their
children into wise decisions in the face of conflicting emotions and
group pressure. Discussion leader — To be announced.

Reserve these five Sunday mornings and plan to attend these en—
lightening and thought provoking family life sessions.

From the Rabbi

During the last week of December Alana and I attended a Marriage
Encounter weekend. We had been told about this wonderful kind of
experience last summer by some dear friends in New Hampshire, and they
had described at length what it had meant and done for them. And so
we decided we would try it too.

Marriage Encounter is for couples who have a good marriage, as a
means of making their marriage even better. The techniques which are
used enable each couple, on their own and in complete privacy. to
learn how to communicate, with an openness to each other which
they most likely never experienced before. It encourages husband and
wife to probe feelings which may have been bottled up for years and
which surface in ways they had never anticipated. And as these long
suppressed feelings come tumbling out to one another, a depth of love
of which neither person had been fully aware also comes to light and
their good marriage becomes even better.

As a result of our experience, a number of things have begun to occur
for us. We are being urged to become presenters at future sessions of
Marriage Encounter. Rabbinic couples are needed, although it is
primarily a layman's movement.

We have been in touch with some of the six other couples in Lexington
who have also participated in Marriage Encounter, although under the
auspices of the Roman Catholic Church, which has its own set up for
weekends, but which works closely with the Jewish expression of
Marriage Encounter after the weekend is over.

And we have continued our own personal growth as a couple, using
the techniques we learned on our Encounter weekend.

It was truly a loving experience for us and we would be delighted
to share it with members of this congregation who might like to know
more about it and what it can do for their marriages. If you are
interested, please let us know.

JUDAISM MUST BE PRACTICED

There is a story told about a
rabbi and a soapmaker who went for
a walk together. The soapmaker
said: "What good is religion? Look
at the trouble and the misery in the
world after thousands of years of
teaching about goodness, truth and
peace — after all the prayers and
sermons and teachings. If religion
is good and true, why should this
be?"

This line of reasoning troubled
the rabbi, but he said nothing.
They continued walking until the
rabbi noticed a child playing in
the gutter. The child was filthy
with mud and grime.

Then the rabbi said: "Look at
that child. You say that soap makes
people clean, but see the dirt on
that youngster? Of what good is
soap? With all the soap in the
world, that child is still filthy.

I wonder just how effective soap is,
after all?"

The soapmaker protested and
said: "But, Rabbi, soap can‘t do
any good unless it is used!"

"Exactly," replied the rabbi.
"So it is with Judaism or any reli—
gion. It isn't effective unless it
is applied and used."

YOUTH KIDDUSH

The Worship Committee which has
sponsored the participation of our
children in the Kiddush Service is
concerned about some of the nega-
tive aspects which have become ap—
parent.

Family worship is encouraged
and heartily endorsed. However,
to make the service a pleasurable
and meaningful one for all of our
members we recommend that parti—
cipation in this portion of the
service be limited to children of
Sunday School age. We have asked
the Religious School to teach the
words and tune of the Kiddush so
that the children who participate
can do so properly. We do not
believe that participation should
consist only of drinking a cup of
grape juice in front of the con~
gregation.

We would also encourage our
members to observe the following
to enhance the mood in the sanc—
tuary: l) Please try to observe
decorum prior to the start of the
service by limiting conversation
as some of our members use this
period for meditation. 2) We
would recommend that children sit
together with their families to
allow closer supervision and to
limit the "social" activity during
the worship service. The Oneg
Shabbat following worship provides
ample opportunity for socializing.
3) Children who become noisy or
otherwise disruptive during the
worship service should be removed
promptly out of consideration for
others.

To encourage members with
school age and pre—school children
to attend services, a trained baby
sitter will be available on the
nights Youth Kiddush Service is

scheduled. A fee of $1.00 per
child will be charged. The next
Youth Kiddush is scheduled January
l7.
