This year begins our 73th anniversary year. in November, 1”C§, our

 

 

 

 

congregation was Started. Ev romparison to other congregations in this
part of the Country, ours is a young svnagogue. The organized tommui
nities along the Ohio River and north date harl tv the lSTU's and
1830's. But Lexington was not along the major trading routes hetwtwq
the East and the opening West. And So Jews tended to typass this City
until long after the Frontier was rlosed. As a matter of tart, when
Beniamin Cratz died in 188A, Pahhi isaar V Wise, who rame dovn trom
Cincinnati to officiate at the funeral, Commented that there were onlv
two Jews present — himself and the dereased.

However in the 75 vears of our exintenre mueh has happtued within
the congregation. To mark this important milestone in our existenre,
we have a 75th Anniversary tommittee hat is planning some extiting
events for us. The first of these will he on lriﬁaw, November llﬂ lQTk,
when one of our former rahhis. Dr. lawn? V. “arrua, the dean <4
American Jewish historians and founder oi tae American Jewish ﬁrthiveh,

The plans for many of the activities marking this snetial anniverW
sarv are still not set. The meetings oi the committee are exuitinp

ings. Our usual busy SthUdUlPS slowed down almtst to a halt.

 

As a result, we have been thrown havk on our own resourres, hnviny to 1
entertain ourselves during the davs oi forred toniinement at home. I

It is under Fufh conditions that we (all upon our inner strengths and
abilities. Do we have enough interests to keep ourselves involved and
not bored? (an we think up enough things for the rhildren to do? Are
we Creative enough to utilize this unexpetted frne time in a produrtive
fashion?
Our Judaism teaches that time is a vital part of lite. The
$19 eyﬁoygnu blessing reminds us of the value of time, thanking Cod that
we have been able to live till pawn imrortant moment in lite. But it is
not just the moments that are trutial. Far more important is what we
put into these moments - the loVe, tht eontern, tie understanding, the
harmonizing.
And so J um want to ash suth questitns as -
Did i read a good book during those snowv davsf
hid 1 «all a friend to see how he or she was?
Did i do something special with mv thild?
Did I help my husband or Rift in an unusual way?
Did L do something worthwhile for myself that I had
been putting off for so long?
loexpevted free moments do not otvur often. When thev do. we should
treasure them; we should use then to add an e Ira measure if sneeialness
to life.

its 73th year with a year long
series of special events during the
1978-79 year. The 75th Anniversary
Committee has been laying plans for
this celebration. It has been de-
cided that a logo would be desir—
able for use on stationery, Temple
Bulletins, posters, announcements,
T-shirts, etc. The congregation
was incorporated on May 27, lQOA
and the 75th year, therefore, Would
end on Nay 27, l979.

The logo contest is open to the
entire congregation. The logo
should he submitted to the Temple
office by April 1, 1978. it should
he in hlack on a white hackeround
and should not exceed in size
