 PRESIDENT'S SPOT

No. 19 - 1/15/84
ARZA

Did you know:

That Reform rabbis cannot perform
weddings, funerals, or conversions
in Israel;

That Orthodox schools, synagogues,
and youth activities receive
public financial assistance but
those of Reform do not;

That the Orthodox political estab—
lishment in Israel continues to
exert efforts to exclude Reform
Jews from the Law of Return;

That there is no religious alter—
native to Orthodoxy in Israel and
an estimated :0 to 85% of Israelis
do not participate in organized
religiOus act1v1ty?

To work to combat these inequities
the UAHC founded APZA, the association
of Reform Zionists of America, at its
Biennial meeting in 1977. Through its
membership in the World Zionist Or—
ganization (WZO) ARZA has made the
voice of American Reform Jews heard in
its effort to achieve true religious
pluralism in Israel and provide a
Reform Jewish alternative to Israelis.
The 30th World Zionist Congress,
the policy making body of the WZO, is
scheduled for Dec., 1982. Representa-
tion in this most influential assembly
is preportional to the membership of
the member organization. Therefore,
it is imperative that ARZA have as
large a membership as possible to as—
sure a sizeable delegation to the
Congress. ARZA'S goal is 100,000
members by June 30, the due date of
submission of lists to WZO; as of
last month 50,000 had joined. Only
29 of our congregation are listed as
ARZA members, and 14 of these have not
yet renewed for 1982. Surely we can
do more to support this important or—
ganization; dues are only $10 for
individuals or $15 per family. Mem—
bership applications were enclosed in
last week's Bulletin and more are
available at the Temple office. JOIN

Lexington is a community that is blessed in many ways. our economic
base tends to be rather stable so that the periodic recessions have had
less effect upon us than on many other parts of the country. We still
have relatively clean air and seldom feel the effects of pollution. We
are surrounded by beautiful farm Country — both horse and other kinds —
with rolling hills and fertile country side. We have develOped an active
cultural base — theatre, art and music. Lexington is indeed an attrac~
tive place in which to live.

And yet perhaps because of our many blessings we have a tendency to
overlook the problems which are also present. Alana took an Adult
Education Course with the school system and told me that there were
people in her class who could not believe there were people in Lexington
with inadequate food, who regularly went to bed hungry. A little more
than a month ago a man was crushed to death in a dumpster while he
slept. He had no home. A recent study of Lexington indicates that
4500 homes (over 10,000 persons) do not have enough food and heat for
the winter. The problems are here, but they tend not to be as visable
as they are in other communities.

I am on the Board of the Community Kitchen. This small facility
serves about 5000 meals a month to people in need. I am involved in an
effort to raise funds for persons in Lexington needing money to pay
their fuel bills this winter. The needs are here. Lexington is not
exempt, as we sometimes would like to think. And with the cut backs in
public monies, other sources (primarily private) will have to be found
to meet our community needs. We shall have to begin thinking in these
terms now so that we can reSpond to the calls for assistance when we
are asked.

William J. Leffler
Rabbi

P.S. In reSponse to the death of the man in a dumpster, Rick Clewett
has written a poem, which I am including elsewhere in this issue
of the Bulletin. I think he expreSSes himself eloquently in it.

February 8 is in B Shevat, the Sew Year or the Irees according to
our Jewish observance. As we look about at our weather we can rightlv
wonder how the trees are observing this occasion. »

V No leaves, not even
a bud to be seen.

However, in Israel they are observing thi: dav.
The almond trees are in bloom and there is the lovelv rolor or renewed
growth beginning to appear once more on the hillsides. It is indeed a
sight to refresh the spirit, just as we shall feel in a couple 0:
months when the greener? begins to return to the uountrv side o:

In H'Shevat also reminds us of our ties to nature, that we urn

OUTREACH

Ever since its prOposal several
years ago by Rabbi Alexander Schindler,
the UAHC'S Outreach Program has been
the subject of much interest, and also
much misinterpretation and misrepre—
sentation. Outreach was the topic dis—
cussed last Friday by our visiting
Scholar—in—Residence, Rabbi Howard
Simon of the Rockdale Temple in Cincin—
nati. His interesting discussion is
worth further conSideration.

As Rabbi Simon explained, he Out—

and misunderstood by both media and
congregatgons alike as an aggresSive
effort to seek converts, to ”sell“
Judaism and proselytizc. such is not
tne case. The major emphasis of tne
program is really education — to attem;t
to bring greater awareness to both the
Jewish and general communities of what
Jews and Judaism are all about. Al—
though most congregations have adult
education efforts and some have pro-
grams for the general community, the
proposed program is meant to extend
these efforts, give them greater scope,
and provide programming cohesiveness.
These efforts
