IN THIS CORNER

Saturday night, January 30, the
Temple Adath Israel Sisterhood will
holds its annual Donor Affair, "An
Evening at Monte Carlo". The money
raised by this annual event supports
our Religious School. This
patronage is very important to our
Religious School's continued level
of excellence in teaching our
children about their heritage and
religion; morals, ethics, and
values; holidays and customs. The
financial maintenance enables us to
hire the best teachers we can find,
provide the best equipment, use the
most recent educational materials
available, and purchase the latest
books written on any given subject.

At last year's Donor Affair, an
absence was notiwd by those who
attended. The families whose
children attend the Religious School
and benefit the most from this

affair, seemed to participate the
least. The Temple members who have
always supported the Temple, who
have lived here a long time, and
whose children are grown and gone
seemed to participate the most.
This worries me.
Themessagethatwesendtoour
children in terms of their Jewish
identity is determined at many
different times and in diverse
ways. One method is through our
consistent participation in the
affairs of the Temple community:
services, communal holiday
celebrations, Temple projects. A
second way is through our interest
in our children's religious
education, taking an active interest
in what they learn, as well as
furthering our own Jewish knowledge
whenever possible. Finally,
attempting to instill in our lives

ARZA NEWS

JERUSALEM REFORM CDNGREATION AWARDED
BUILDING

During Simchat Torah services in 1986,
the Reform congregation in the Baka
section of Jerusalem was attacked by the
Orthodox rabbi of the neighborhood and 30
of his followers. Following the attack,
the local leaders of Shas, the ultra—
Orthodox Sephardic party, pledged that
they would never agree to the presence of
a Reform synagogue in the area.
Nonetheless, Jerusalem mayor, Teddy
Kollek, promised to help find the
congregation a permanent home.

Kollek has now delivered on his promise,
despite Shas' strenuous objections.

Through his intervention, the
Municipality of Jerusalem has offered the
synagogue a 500 meter site in an
excellent location in Bake. The lot
includes an old but structurally sound
building, which the congregation intends
to expend and renovate. Called Kg;
Haneshama, the congregation has grown
rapidly since its founding two years ago,
although it must operate out of a local
community center. Individuals interested
in visiting the synagogue during their
next visit to Jerusalem should contact
ARZA — the Association of Reform Zionists
of America — at 838 Fifth Avenue, New
York, NY 10021.

SKIIAL CDNCERNS — (DIVE/[UNITY ACTION

A group of Temple members will be serving
as volunteers on the feeding line at the
Community Kitchen for their Holiday Meal
on Christmas morning. The committee
hopes to organize additional groups to
serve at the Community Kitchen for other
special occasions and on a regular basis.
This would be monthly on Monday nights.
There is currently a need for a group to
serve on the fifth anday of the month,
about four times a year. Please call
committee chairmen, Martin Kaplan or J0
Belin, for more information.

We are continuing the effort to collect
earned and other non—perishable food
items for the Community Kitchen. Also we
would like to resume collecting used
clothing, especially men's work clothes
in wearable condition. This was quite
successful last year. Please bring both
food and clothing items to the coat room

n

at the entrance of the religious school
wing, and place then in the boxes
provided. Of greatest need are high
protein food items, such as canned meats,
fish and beans.

A community wide Martin Luther King
commemorative event will be held on
Sunday, January 17, 1988, from 8:30 to
10:00 A.M. Additional details will be
published in the next bulletin.

AIXDP'I‘ A REFUSENIK

The Congregation will adopt a Refusenik
and encourages as many members as
possible to correspond with this person.
This is part of a Lexington community—
wide effort to actively support the
Soviet Jews who are seeking to leave.

The actual selection will be discussed at
the next committee meeting, Monday,
January 11, at 7:45 P.M., everyone is
encouraged to attend.

IN THIS CORNER

Christmas morning a handful of TAI
members went to the Horizon Center and
helped prepare and serve a hearty morning
meal to over two hundred of the hungry
and homeless of Lexington, Kentucky. I
left the Horizon Center with mixed
feelings: warmth that I had temporarily
helped to alleviate some of the pain of
those who suffer; and frustration and
sadness that the answers to feeding the
hungry and homeless are so huge. On this
particular morning, each of us who helped
knew that a mitzvah had been performed,
but we knew that it would take many more
mitzvot, from each member of the TAI
community, to truly begin to change the
conditions of the less fortunate.

0.1r Social Concerns Committee sponsored
and organized this humble morning's work.
They very much want to continue

participating in the Horizon centers food
program. (This program is connected with
Community Kitchen.) Right now they are
considering the months when there is a
fifth Monday, a time unfilled as of now.
In order to make this mitzvah work, we
must have volunteers who can offer their
time one or more anday evenings a year.

It is easy to make a contribution to
Community Kitchen or God's Pantry, or to
MAZON when the occasion calls for it.
Yet, the rewards of physically helping
those who need help are untold. In our
Jewish lives, the ultimate goal is Tikkun
Clam, the repair of the world. Only
through our actions will we ever bring
about Tikkun Clam. May this year see
each of us contribute to the betterment
of the world and our community.

Stan May is a superbly qualified, very
enthusiastic and personable man, who at
present, is serving as the executive

as membership recruitment and retention.
He also taught adult education courses,
organized fund raising, and served on

ARZA NEWS

Jerusalem's large ultra—Orthodox
population would like the city closed
down completely on Shabbat. Its non-
Orthodox residents are fighting back,
however. This summer, when movie
theatres opened on Shabbat in Jerusalem
for the first time, ultra-Orthodox groups
sponsored a series of demonstrations,
some of them violent, and non—Orthodox
groups responded with counter—
demcnstrations of their om.

For the first time, the Israel Reform
movement has become actively involved in
the battle. It has opposed all
restrictive laws which limit the freedom
of Jerusalem's residents, and has begun
to offer Reform religious and cultural

actiVities on Shabbat. Bet Skmmzel, the
youth hostel of the World Union for
Progressive Judaism, has initiated an
meg Shabbat program at 10 P.M. on Friday
evenings. The program begins with an
introductory lecture on a Jewish subject,
followed by a cultural offering. The
Hebrew Union College is beginning
cultural programming for young families
on Saturday afternoon.

The battle for religious freedom in
Jerusalem is coordinated by the ARZA—
spcnsored Israel Religious Action Center.

FIRST OFFICIAL HEBREW CCURSE___r.

BAKU — Authorities are permitting the
first officially approved Hebrew course
to be given to Azerbidhzan's capital
city, where an advertisement appeared in
a local ncwspaper, Vyshika, on November
4, offering private lessons in ”the
Jewish language".

The course was organized by a group of
young Jews, many of them non—refusniks.
'Ib date, there have been more than
seventy enrollments for the course, which
is permitted to be taught because Baku
Jews are officially regarded as an ethnic
minority with its own traditions and
language.

Jewish activists from elsewhere in the
Soviet Union, where the teaching of
Hebrew is still prohibited, are hailing
the news from Baku. Commenting on the
development there, IVbscow Hebrew teacher
BORIS BERMAN observed: "When we consider
how we've been battering our heads
against the wall in Moscow, Leningrad and
in the Ukrainian cities, it's encouraging
for all of us. We wish them (the Baku
Jews) Kol 'Ibv."
