IN THIS CORNER

At long last, after waiting almost
a year, the Lexington Jewish ccrrmunity
will finally resettle its first Soviet
Jewish family. There will be two mre
families soon to follow. Unless
unforeseen problems occur, Mikhail and
Marina Slepak. and their son Alexander,
will arrive in Lexington sometime in
Ix‘arch.

The time has come to start
rebuilding the momentum this community
had last spring when we gathered clothes
and furnishings in anticipation of the
arrival of a family or two or three.
'Ihrough no fault of our own, arriving
Soviet Jewish families became scarce
last summer. We had to learn to be
patient and wait our turn to join in
this world wide Jewish effort of relief
and resettlement. Now it's our turn and
how we respond will certainly define the

character and commitment of this
community to saving Soviet Jewish lives.
It is also important to remember
that while we are resettling a few
families, Israel is resettling tens of
thousands of families. Approximately
20,000 Soviet Jews arrive in Israel each
month. Israel is doing everything that

she can to provide adequate housing and ,

assistance, but her economy is being
severely strained by this wonderful
burden. ENentually, the 1—2 million
Soviet Jews who resettle in Israel will
contribute significantly to the economy
and the progressive nature of the State.
Through Operation Exodus, handled by our
CKJF, you can help Soviet Jews settle
into new, productive, and Jewishly
comnitted lives.

What can you do here for our few
families? There are many areas of

assistance. We will need drivers,
English teachers, shleppers, families to
help with teaching Juiaism, people to
set up their apartment, take them to the
grocery store, and more. It is most
important that within the first three
months the Slepak's move from the status
of immigrant to the level of integrated,
self—sufficient, and involved.
IknowthatIcancountonthis
community to respond with the highest
level of integrity. This is the fourth
wave of immigration of Jews to America.
The first was in the middle of the
nineteenth century when many German Jews
fled Germany; the second began in the
1880 's with the Eastern European Jewish
immigration: the third was the period of

the 1930’s; and now today. Scmewhere in
this time table your ancestors and mine
came to the United States, and hopefully
there were Jews to help them in
settlement. Now it is our turn. If you
haven't signed up to help, call me or
U18 CKJF office. If you don‘t know what
you can do, we'll keep your name and let
you know when we need you. me are our

Our Tenple community is really a
large extended family. Through our
collective energies and efforts, we
financially and spiritually support the
programs. services, and endeavors of the
various arms, committees. and Board of
Trustees of the congregation. When we
cone together as a large or small group
of Tangle members, whether to pray or to
socialize, to study or to contemplate.
the end result is an enhancement of this

congregation. This fund raising evening
is an opportunity to entellish the
congregation not only fiscally, but
through the opportunity of just having a
good time. Knowing that this good
time‘ is for us and our posterity. we
can enjoy ourselves even Kore.

No one likes to talk about money or
raising money, but each member of this
congregation knows that in order to
sustain our programs and services, to
educate our adults and children, it
takes money. By holding a fund raising
event, separate from the Sisterhood

RABBI SAYS ND SPORTSI: 10 REASONS WHY
LOCAL RABBI BOWJIPKSIIXHBALL

1. Every time I went, they asked me
for money.

2. The people with whom I sat didn't
see1 very friendly.

Ab.)

. The seats were too hard and not

dunfortable.

5. I was sitting with hypocrites:
they came only to see what others
were wearing. Also, they didn't
live up to the high moral and
physical standards of the players.

6. Some ganes went into overtime, and
I was late getting home.

7. The ganes are scheduled when I do
other things.

8. My parents took me to too many
ballgwnes when I was growing up.

9. Since I read a book on football, I
feel like I know wore than the
coaches anyhow

10. I don't want to force football on

my children; I want them to choose

for themselves which sport they
like best.

The oaach never came to call on me.
