AREN‘T WE WONDERFUL}

Have you heard the news? Why, it's
in all the paper53..uuuunun...”-
In the year 1952co.oooo.ooolsc for the
first time in our recorded history......
We, the people of the United States.....
failed to lynch a fellow citizen.....oco
Aren‘t We Wonderful£n...........o.u.u

Let's see now............. It was
176 years ago that we boasted of our
belief that all men were created equal..
With certain unalienable rights.......oo
like life...oqogg.aonnuante-upcoo-cooco.

And it was about 87 years ago that
we spelled it outage-on.oooooun-c-fluoouo
so that all men could read it plain—
ly...'...'I......I....'CIII.IDI‘UICI....

I wonder how many people have been
murdered....... while We have tried.....
to catch up with our forefathers?.......

At any rate........ we have arrived
....... so many heart—broken years later
....... either by chance or through
direction, at our first lynchless year..

Before we Smile in pride-ot-oooouoo

RETRACTION

We are sorry to announce that the
winter series of lectures, announced
in our last BULLETIN have had to be
postponed. We shall announce the re—
vised date in the near future.

WITH gag RABBI

On January 7, Rabbi Davis par-
ticipated in a panel discussion on
Religion and Psychology at Berea College
Berea, Kentucky.

PRESIDENTS CORNER
(This week's message comes from
the President of the Brotherhood.)

I want to sincerely thank every-
one for their very generous support
of the 1952 Chanukah Carnival. Fi-
nancially the Carnival was a huge
success and I believe a good time was
had by all.

At a recent Directors meeting
of the Brotherhood, Al Fogel re-
signed as Vice President. we Were
all very sorry to see Al leave
Lexington, but are also happy for
him that he Will be closer to his
family and especially his new
granddaughter. Al will be missed
by all but not forgotten; The
Directors wisely chose a capable
man in Sanford Lowenthal to fill
the vacated Vice Presidency.

I am sure that the Brotherhood
will continue to grow as it has in
the past.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS

Grade Seven, having returned from
its first field trip to various churches
in Lexington, reported to the Sunday
School Assembly the results of their
project. Each member of the class
chose one aspect of their trip to the
Episcopal Church and explained to the
rest of the Sunday School the impres:
sions that were received. The Assemr
bly then asked the members of Grade
Seven a series of questions and a very
spirited discussion took place.

we eagerly await the result of
their next trip which will be to the
Roman Catholic Church.

P L E A S E I I 1

Please fill out and send in to the
Temple the information cards which you
received with last week's BULLETIN.

It is imperative that we have these in
our files; Our Temple can function

uest if the members cooperate in sup—
plying us with the necessary information.
If you have lost your information card,
please call the Temple Secretary, 2-h606.

BOILING SPRINGS COUNTRY CLUB

Boiling Springs will be the scene
of our annual Purim dance sponsored by
the Temple Sisterhood. On February 28
the entire Congregation (we hope) will
be present at a truly gala affair.

Aside from the beautiful decora—
tions, aside from the excellent food,
aside from the delightful play, aside
from an evening of dancing and enter—
tainment, you will be supporting the
Wonderful projects of our Temple
Sisterhood.

AN EVENING YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO MISSI

5N ENLIGHTENED MEMBERSHIP

In order to keep our membership
completely informed concerning the
policies of Adath Israel, we have
prepared copies of our ByLLaws and
enclosed them in this week's BULLETIN.
Read them when you have a chance.

File them away safely. Refer to them
often.

CONTRIBUTION

The Congregation gratefully ac-
cepts a contribution to the Rabbi's
Fund in memory of Mrs. Marie Salmon.
The contributors were Mr. and Mrs.
James Frankel.

DATES TO REMEMBER

Did you notice the two calendar
months in the front page? The dates
circled signified two Brotherhood
programs, a Hillel supper, the Sister-
hood Purim Dance, Sabbath Services
and Religious School. Can you match
the events with the dates?

MYSTERY DATE

Here is a date so shrouded in
mystery that We dare not tell you
what will take place. All that we
are allowed to say is that on this
date one of the most important events
in the life of our Temple will be pre—
sented. If you are at all concerned
with the larger issues that face, have
faced, and will face Temple Adath
Israel, then you will do well to set
aside FEBRUARY 8.

Congregation Adath Israel
12h North'Ashland
Lexington, Kentucky

Open Letter to the Congregation:

Boy Scout Troop 22, sponsored by Adath Israel and with its headquarters
at the Temple, has made remarkable progress and achieved top honors in
this region during a growth process of the last two years.

Most amazing in the Troopis success, however, is the fact that such'has
been accomplished with the complete disinterest of the Congregation,
with a total lack of encouragement by the parents, and with absolute
indifference on the part of the members of the Troop Committee. With
the exception of the Congregational President's hard Work, the support,
both actual and moral, given by the Temple and its committee to Troop
22, to its fine Scoutmaster, and to the Boy Scout movement in general
has been auspicious by its absence.

Here is an opportunity for youths to grow strong and straight and honest,
and here also is an opportunity for Jews to help themselves (without
cost) in their efforts against racial and religious discrimination; yet
here 223 let all this sift through your fingers because ygu refuse to
lend a helping hand.

The time has come, however, that this Troop can no longer progress or
even survive without the positive and sincere cooperation of its com-
mittee and the Congregation. If the committee members ~ I will not
embarrass them by naming them here — do not intend to work willingly
(and as a favor to no one) from now one, please send your resignations
to me immediately, So I will not have to apologize for you any longer.
If the parents of scouts and the parents of prospective scouts do not
intend to encourage their children and also the Scoutmaster and to help
the troop in various small ways, please advise me, so that the welcome
mat need not be kept out for them at all Scout meetings. If the members
of the Congregation do not intend to visit the Troop occasionally on its
Thursday night meetings, then let them ever remain ignorant of the juve—
niles who are not delinquent.

I am not asking for your help. I'm telling you that unless you give it,
you have lost a tremendous opportunity to insure your children‘s happi~
ness, present and future. The seeds you sow . . . .

Sincerely,

arms

Al StrauSs
Chairman, Troop Committee

A tWO week debate is drawing to a
close. Each Sunday, at Assembly, the
Sunday School students have an open
meeting. A few weeks ago the Charity
Committee presented its report as to
the dispersement of the moneys collect-

suggestion was made from the floor that
part of the money be used for the Tem~

Munich leading the fight for this
motion, and Dennis Moel rallying the
opposition, the problem was clearly
stated“ Next Sunday, the final vote

POSTMORTEM 9g sewerage];

By the grace_of God we have passed
safely through another Brotherhood Week.
For seven days there was a frenzy of ac—
tivity, and anbecstasy of fumbling While
we paid official homage to an official
holiday.

We met in large unwieldy groups to
lay flowers on the grave of brotherhood
as if it were the Unknown Soldier on
Armistice Day. We paid solemn tribute
to brotherhood, and read lengthy euloa
gies, as if it were over something that
has passed away. And when it was over,
we looked at our watches and said to
ourselves, "Now, where were we...»?"

Now I grant that it is an interest—
ing game that We play, but I have an i—
dea that we could vastly improve upon
it. First of all, we abolish Brother—
hood'Week and bring back brotherhood°
Secondly, since we must have our cir-
cuses along with our bread, we estab—
lish Hatred.week. Now that would be
something to contemplate... no. I a can. no a

We'd have a huge meeting, and we
would get ourselves some outstanding
authority on the subject; perhaps Sen.
McCarthy, or Pegler, or Gerald L. K.
Smith. we Would sit politely through
the Speech and quietly yawn behind our
napkinSOOQOOOo-ococoa-0.0..-u.cocoon...

And when it Was finished we Would
walk out into the clean fresh air, look
at our watches, and say to ourselves,
"NOW, where were WBcocoooooo-oooOIoO?"

Everything would be the opposite
of today. Brotherhood would be a vi~
brant part of our lives, and hatred on—
1y an official occasion. we would
place flowers on the grave of hatred
and piously murmur, "May it rest in
peace.“

Now, whom could we get to be

 FROM WHERE I SIT
by
Rabbi Maurice Davis

You’re sitting around with friends..
and one of them makes a remark about the
Temple that is destructive in nature.....
and petty in character....... But you
haven't the time to enter into a learned
rebuttal 0n the matter-educac.nogooocoioo

Has that ever happened to you? Have
you wanted to point out that the Temple
is ours......... and one person being
spitefuloooo-oouonooo- affects YOU?-ocouo

If you have ever witnessed this
phenomenon....... then I have the answer.
It is the title of a song from GUYS AND
DOLLSIOCOOCOIDOUOIOIQIOIIIOCOOICOOQOI....

Just turn to your friend and say
(or.... if you are not the rabbi... sing)
"Sit down, you're rocking the boats"

You know...... we really are in the
same boat........ and each of us has a
right to see that our vessel is not
swamped by waves of vindictiveness.......
and pettiness....u...................ou

Maybe we will live to see the day
when all mankind will realize that it
travels in one boat. And from one end
of the earth to the other, we will hear
neighbor warn neighbor, "Sit down, you‘re
rocking the boat!"

Let's make that our favorite squelch
1ine.................. Use it wisely.....
USS it qullooacuo-nao-counoencan-oocoOOI.

Out of the mouths of Guys and Dolls
can come forth pearls of wisdom.........
Incidentally............ Are YOU rocking

Lhe boat?oo.oooooooooocoanoeuse-cocoa...

On March h and 5, Rabbi Davis will
address Berea College on a series of
subjects. The title of his convocation
address will be THE RELIGION OF A MODERN
JEW.

GOOD'WORK!

We wish to congratulate the NFTY
group for two excellent affairs in
February. Under the presidency of
David Davis, the group conducted a
Brotherhood Indoor Picnic with members
of church groups as their guests.

Last Sunday, they arranged and
conducted the Purim Party for the en—
tire Sunday School which was considered
a huge success.

PRESIDENTS' CORNER
(This week's message comes from
Vivian'Weil, President of Sisterhood.)

Let me take this opportunity to
again thank each one of you who so
generously supported the annual Sister—
hood Purim affairo 'Without your co-
operation the evening could not have q
been such a success — - both financial-
ly and socially. f

Our next big project is the Inter-
faith meeting to be held at the Temple
on Wednesday, March 18th. The chair-
man, Marion Davis and her committee,
are doing a tremendous job with the
invitations, speaker, and tea for the
afternoon. This affair is cityewide
and we are expecting guests from all
churches. There will be no business
luncheon meeting preceding the Inter-
faith program, but the entire member-
ship of the Sisterhood is cordially
invited to be our guests for the
afternoon.

Remember the date! Wednesday,
march 18th at 2:30 P.h.

pop YOUR CONVENIENCE
