FROM WHERE I SIT

“by
Rabbi Maurice Davis

Did you know that today is a holiday? It is, if
you are reading this column on January 17. It is the
beginning of National Thrift Heck. That‘s because
today is Benjamin Franklin‘s Birthday, and he was an
old hand at being thrifty.

If you want to be scholarly about it, today is also
the beginning of National Printing Week..also because
If. Franklin who was born just 250 years ago.

1e11, I don't know very much about printing, and
there are th se who will say that I don't know very
much about thrift. But I think they are wrong.

Of course, there are many Ways of being thrifty.

i y‘with our money. But
1 seems to me that there are others in Which We can
be thri ty,

re can be thrifty with our thoughts. I don't mean
being miserly. I only mean that we can Weed out
certain thoughts that are unrorthy, and are taking up
space that more worthy thoughts could occupy.

We can be thrifty With out Words. I don't mean
that we should stop Speaking, or become taciturn in
every‘way, But we can use our Words more pleasantly,
and.when we speak try to bring a Wee bit more of
hapliness into the lives of others.

After all, I think that Mr. Franklin Would agree
that being thrifty, means also to spend judiciously,
and if We can spend our words to purchase banniness
for others Would that not be spendirg wisely?

Happy Birthday, it. Franklin, and a thrifty year
to all of us.
