Salutations, readers.
What a summer it

has been so far.
Think of all the
exciting things that
have happened
(cricket chirps)
Okay. So not much
has gone on, but
nevertheless. humor
will prevail. This
week's topic is a
stretch, though. i
just happened to be
in the new UK
president's office.
yadda yadda yadda. I
ended up being
chased by members
of the Russian mafia,
who are actually
nice guys after a
couple drinks.
Anyway, I stumbled
upon a list of new
policies Lee Todd
plans to implement
this fall. While the
changes are only
minor, they still
should be brought to
your attention.

instead of the title of
'president' that
many leaders of
colleges take, Lee
Todd will now be
known as "El
Presidente" and will
be followed around
by a mariachi band.
"Hail to the Chief"
will finally be played
with the respect it
deserves.

To bring in extra cash
for UK. the strongest
squirrels on campus
will be trained to
fight in "Squirrel
Combat" matches
held every Thursday
night against
squirrels from other
SEC schools.

There will now be a
nurse on hand during
all statistics classes
to deliver caffeine
injections to all
"consciously-
challenged"
students.

The Student Center
cafeteria will now
feature "Food Fest
Fridays." It’s
basically leftovers
from the entire week
with an attractive
name.

UK President Lee Todd an-

UK Top 20 task force.

The task force committee

“I said all along nobody's re-
ally defined what that (top 20 sta

Todd said the committee will
also look at factors that measure
UK's status as a university.

The group will be co-cliaired
by Phyllis Nash. the associate

vice president for academic and
student affairs. and Mike Nietzel.
UK's acting provost. The compo
sitioii of the committee has not
been determined. but it will have
major representation from the
academic deans.

Todd said success Wlll not
only be determined by the
amount of federal research funds

undergoes changes

Todd said he believes the new system will enhance

The first major change during the transition from
former UK President Charles Wethington to Lee Todd
has taken place and the effects are dramatic.

Todd presented a plan for a reorganization of the
UK administrative structure to the executive commit-
tee of the Board of Trustees at a July 5 meeting, The
group unanimously approved the plan.

The major change between the past structure and
the new one is the adoption of a provost system. The
system will include a provost. or chief academic officer.
who oversees the academics of the university and re:
ports directly to the president. The plan differs from the

communication between all people at 17K.

"When I sit down with this management, I want
.Iim Holsinger (senior vice president and chancellor of
the medical center) to give us his ideas about what the
whole university is doing.“ Todd said.

Though llolsinger. who was previously the chan»
cellor of the medical center. will still be referred to as
chancellor. the addition of the title of senior vice presi-
dent will allow Holsinger to provide
university as a whole

Todd named Michael Nietzel. ioriiierly the dean of
the Graduate School. as the acting provost. A nation:
wide search will begin soon to find a permanent
provost. Nietzel said he does not intend to apply for the

chancellor system employed by Wethington. which
called for chancellors to oversee the Lexington campus

and medical center.

structure reduces cost,

Scollay said the necessity of the commissmn was evident
due to two reports released by the ad hoc committee.

The studies were completed in 1990 and 2000 The first was a

In the past. many have
questioned Aerosniith‘s aging
status and asked if the band
can still bring in the people.
An eightinile backup on Inter
state 69 of fans waiting to park

answer.

The band electrified the

crowd with performances of

old favorites such as "Walk

This Way” and "Love In an lilo
vator." All the songs had the
feel of a concert. due to gui-
tarist .ioe Perry often breaking
into spectacular guitar riffs
and drummer .loey Kramer
into drum solos

Steven Tyler was colorful
as always; as At‘l'tlfs‘llllllTS front

with his usual onstage antics
such as dancing During the
performance of “t‘razy.” Tyler

The only sotir note about

"In a bold first move as UK's 11th president,
newcomer Lee Todd announced last week he
will be setting up a special task force to examine
recent controversies over the increased employ-
ee health insurance cost. According to the July 4
edition of the Lexington Herald-Leader, the 12-
inetnher task force will investigate aspects of in-
surance ranging front “the cost of benefits to
vendors to university support.”

Todd has also reorganized UK‘s top-heavy ad-
ministration. He has announced a system that
relies on a provost. or chief academic officer,
and includes a vice president for corporate rela-

tions and economic outreach.
MTKELE Oil; ”1 Wm...” _. Many are congratulating Todd on his pre-
._. ' paredness and the speed with which he took ac-
tion once he was in office. Clearly. this is an indi-
cation of the rest of Todd‘s presidency, and he has
proven so far that he is not afraid to take the reins.

But many issues are still unaddressed. One of
Todd‘s main platforms while interviewing for
president was preserving UK greenspace. Stu-
dents are still protesting over UK's involvement
with the Fair Labor Association. A recent study
put out last spring shows UK also has a ways to go
in the field of gender equality.

What do you think Todd needs to focus
on most?"
