A former All-America gridder and three-sport star during collegiate days at University of Illinois and Kentucky's Director of Athletics since 1938, Bernie A. Shively directs the U.K. Invitational in the capacity of tournament manager. The U.K. sports chief, who conceived the idea of sponsoring a major on-campus cage classic in 1953, also currently is serving a second term as chairman of the NCAA University Division Basketball Tournament and for many years headed the committee controlling the now-defunct Southeastern Conference post-season cage tourney. During his tenure at Kentucky, "Shive" has held posts of football line coach, head of the Physical Education Department, track coach, baseball coach and head football coach in addition to supervising the development of one of the nation's most outstanding athletic programs in the capacity of Director of Athletics. 13th UK INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT
0
The 1965 University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament in its 13th renewal adds to its already great national prestige by offering a high-calibre field truly intersectional in scope with visiting participants from the Far West, Rocky Mountains and the Midwest joining the host Kentucky Wildcats of the Southeast in a bid for the coveted title.
Kentucky Athletic Director Bernie A. Shively, tournament manager, has announced the visiting teams for this year's UKIT as the Golden Bears of University of California, U.S. Air Force Academy's Falcons and the Hoosiers of Indiana University. Site of the tournament, inaugurated in 1953, again will be Kentucky's 1 1,500-seat Memorial Coliseum with double-headers each night leading to the championship and third place honors.
Pairings for the nation's richest and most prestige-packed regular season cage classic will pit the Golden Bears of Cal, in their second UKIT try, against Indiana's Big Ten Hoosiers in the first night opener followed by an engagement between budding Air Force and Kentucky's seven-time champions.
At stake, in addition to the title and a pair of important early victories, are an imposing trophy, a record-sized share of the net proceeds and significant national prestige which has resulted in a major climb in the national rankings. Twice in recent years, the UKIT champ has vaulted all the way to the top spot in the polls and often the winner has uset its early success as a springboard to posting good seasons. Illinois, which copped the title a year ago, jumped to seventh. The monetary dividend has mounted steadily over the years since inception of the UKIT in 1 953, increasing from $8,200 paid the four teams the first year to a national record $15,420 awarded teams in 1959. Last year, each participant picked up a share amounting to $14,368.30 (second highest in tournament history) as the highest paid attendance (22,804 for two nights) witnessed the action.
Public acceptance of the UKIT reflects the high calibre of the fields that have participated in the pre-Christmas classic. Twenty-three cage powers from every section of the nation have joined the host Wildcats in the previous dozen tournaments. Prime aim of Athletic Director Shively and UK Coach Adolph Rupp in inaugurating the UK Invitational was to return big-time basketball, beset by scandal hatched in big city arenas, to the campus and to provide the public with a view of top-flight basketball as it is played in different sections of the country. Furthering the high ideals of an on-cam-pus tournament and rejecting overemphasis of commercialism, net proceeds of the UKIT are divided equally among participants.
This year's participants are noteworthy in that three of the four schools are past NCAA champions. Kentucky leads with four wins, Indiana has two wins, and Calfornia has won once.

The Coach . . .
Energetic Bob Spear is almost a tradition at the U.S. Air Force Academy. As the only basketball coach that the newest service school has ever had, he shows a nine-year success record of 112 wins and 92 losses during the term. Spear, now a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force, started the cage sport at the Academy by tutoring a first time freshman group in 1955-56. Prior to that, he had gained experience as a Navy assistant for three campaigns. Coach Spear played his collegiate basketball at DePauw University in Greencastle, In. He is an advocate of the shuffle style of offensive patterns but teaches the more convential man-for-man defensive alignment.
Falcons In '65
Air Force Academy makes a first appearance in the UK Invitational determined to use a first-ever meeting with host Kentucky and a second-night engagement with another UKIT foe as a stepping stone toward breaking a three-season losing trend. The Falcons, like opening night opponent Kentucky, lack substantial height but do boast of experience in the presence of all but one of the hands off its 1964-65 combination. All told, eight of the 1 1-man travelling squad were letter winners last winter. Four familiar faces, all of whom averaged scoring in double figures last year, will be joined in the starting lineup by sophomore strong man Eli Bebout, 6-4 forward. The Cadets have encountered "rough air" in early engagements but should have their shuffle offense smoothed out for the battle with UK's Wildcats.

-NOW SERVING KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN- CALIFORNIA Golden Bears
The Coach . . .
Starting his sixth season as head basketball coach of the California Golden Bears, Rene Herrerias is a disciple of control basketball whose overall record (58 wins and 65 losses) belie the difficult time that his strategy has given Cal opponents. Herrerias was a 134-pound guard during collegiate days at University of San Francisco and quarterbacked the Dons to the 1949 NIT championship. His first coaching experience came during six years at St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco and he later served four years as chief scout and assistant coach under Pete Newell (now Athletic Director) at California before taking over as head man in 1960.
Golden Bears In '65
Pressure-proof California, a former NCAA National Champion (1959) and only one of the visiting 1965 quintets to have appeared previously (1960) in the UK Invitational, looms as the probable top threat to Kentucky's ambitions toward another tournament success. The Golden Bears, operating from the troublesome ball control offensive pattern, anticipate a bigger and better ball club than the outfit which sank to an 8-13 season last year. There's a good nucleus of returning veterans who are expected to improve plus some promising new faces. In the height department, the Bears offer seven-footer Joun Wardell and junior college transfers Russ Moe and Bruce Steckel, both 6-7. Scoring will be well distributed, making the Bears tough to handle.

The Coach . . .
New at the helm of Indiana's hustling Hoosiers this season is capable and determined Lou Watson. The former Indiana star from Jeffersonville, one of the school's all-time high scorers, moved into the pressure-filled role of head coach this year to replace veteran Branch Mc-Cracken, who retired after nearly a quarter-century at I.U. Watson is no stranger to Hoosier fans or opponents, having played as a key man on McCracken teams of the late fortiestwice All-Conference, MVP and captain. He served as freshman coach two seasons, then spent three years in high school ranks before returning to his Alma Mater and becoming McCracken's assistant in 1958.
Hoosiers In '65
Beset by problems stemming from the most inexperienced team in school history, Indiana Coach Lou Watson figured this would be a re-building year in which his squad would bide its time while taking lumps in king-size doses. The Hoosiers are missing the first seven men off last year's outfit, including the entire starting unit, and returnees played so little that they accounted for only 141 of lU's 2,200 points. But disturbing sounds of restlessness are coming from Hoosier-land indicating Indiana may not be content to "wait until next year." Early action showed Watson's team potentially much stronger than had been figured and IU could surprise.

The Coach . . .
In the past 35 years that Baron Adolph Rupp has guided the basketball fortunes of Kentucky, he has earned and been accorded just about every honor existing in connection with the game. To mention only a few, the "Man in the Brown Suit" is officially recognized as cagedom's winningest coach (720-150-83%); holds the record of coaching four NCAA titlists plus an NIT championship and world Olympic success; has never had a losing season; produced one perfect campaign; became in 1964 one of only two still-active coaches to garner 700 career victories; selected twice as national "Coach of the Year;" and developed more All-Americans (22 players honored 32 times) than any other coach.
Wildcats In'65
Not all of the problems that faced Kentucky going into the current campaign have been satisfactorily ironed out, but the Wildcats' pre-tournament activity has lent hope that the 1965-66 band will be a force to be reckoned with in the national and sectional picture. Early action by UK has been highlighted by the strong play of last season's MVP, forward Pat Riley, and by leading scorer Louie Dampier plus the emergence of a degree of help in the vital pivot position where 6-5 soph Thad Jaracz has come through. The 'Cats still are without the big man to help out on the boards and must depend on speed, excellent shooting and improving defensive play to offset the apparent weakness if they are to pick up an eighth UKIT trophy.
